The Paint Lab / Materials Science Engineer will develop, qualify, and support coating formulations, application processes, and test methods to ensure durable, compliant, and cost-effective surface finishes for [product line/industry]. This role leads laboratory testing, failure investigations, supplier material evaluations, and cross-functional support for production scale-up and continuous improvement.
Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):
Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, Material Science, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, Chemistry or related discipline. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
2+ years of work-related experience with a Bachelors, or work-related experience with a Masters
2+ years of engineering experience in Aerospace industry
Years (typically 27) of hands-on experience in coatings/paint formulation, test methods, or materials characterization
Experience performing common coatings tests (salt spray, adhesion, gloss, abrasion) and interpreting results
Strong written and verbal communication; ability to write technical reports and present findings to stakeholders.
Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects.
Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):
Experience with surface pretreatments (conversion coatings, phosphate, chromate alternatives), electrocoat or powder coatings.
Familiarity with industry standards (ASTM, etc.) and environmental/regulatory requirements regarding coatings.
Proficiency with laboratory instrumentation: spectrophotometer, glossmeter, salt spray chamber, QUV/weathering, cross-hatch adhesion tools, pull-off tester, hardness testers.
Prior experience in a production-support or manufacturing transfer role.
