Middle School English Language Arts/Mathematics Teacher

Nature of Work

Under the general supervision of the school principal, the Middle School English Language Arts/Mathematics Teacher plans, organizes, and delivers effective instruction designed to help students develop the academic knowledge, skills, and habits necessary for success in school and beyond.

The teacher provides instruction in English language arts and/or mathematics in accordance with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study, district curriculum expectations, and the individual needs of students.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plans and delivers high-quality instruction aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and district curriculum expectations.
  • Provides engaging learning experiences in English language arts and/or mathematics.
  • Uses a variety of instructional strategies, materials, technology, and assessments to meet the needs of diverse learners.
  • Provides whole-group, small-group, and individualized instruction as appropriate.
  • Differentiates instruction based on student readiness, achievement data, learning needs, and interests.
  • Establishes and maintains a safe, respectful, structured, and supportive classroom environment.
  • Implements effective classroom-management practices that promote student engagement and responsibility.
  • Monitors and evaluates student academic growth using formal and informal assessment data.
  • Maintains accurate student records, grades, attendance, and other required documentation.
  • Provides timely feedback to students and communicates student progress to parents and guardians.
  • Conducts parent conferences and collaborates with families to support student success.
  • Identifies student learning, behavioral, social, and emotional needs and works collaboratively with appropriate school personnel to provide support.
  • Participates in professional learning communities, data teams, faculty meetings, professional development, and school improvement activities.
  • Collaborates with colleagues to plan instruction, analyze student data, and improve student outcomes.
  • Implements required accommodations, modifications, intervention plans, and student support plans.
  • Selects, uses, and maintains appropriate instructional materials, resources, and equipment.
  • Supervises students during classroom and non-classroom activities.
  • Participates in school and district committees, student activities, and other duties as assigned.
  • Maintains professional conduct and complies with all Rutherford County Schools policies, procedures, and expectations.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the principal or designee.

Minimum Training and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Valid or eligible for a North Carolina teaching license in Middle Grades English Language Arts, Middle Grades Mathematics, or another appropriate licensure area based on the assignment.
  • Successful completion of required background checks.
  • Experience teaching middle school students preferred.

  • Knowledge of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for middle grades English language arts and/or mathematics.
  • Knowledge of effective instructional practices, assessment strategies, and differentiated instruction.
  • Ability to manage instructional time effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain a positive classroom environment.
  • Ability to manage student behavior consistently and appropriately.
  • Ability to analyze student-performance data and adjust instruction accordingly.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, colleagues, and community members.
  • Ability to collaborate with teachers, administrators, support staff, and families.
  • Ability to use instructional technology and digital resources effectively.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and meet required deadlines.
  • Ability to work effectively with students from diverse backgrounds and with a wide range of academic and developmental needs.
  • Ability to respond appropriately in stressful or emergency situations.

Essential Job Functions

  • Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Must be able to read, interpret, and prepare instructional plans, reports, student records, correspondence, and other professional documents.
  • Must be able to operate computers, copiers, calculators, instructional technology, and other classroom equipment.
  • Must be able to move throughout the classroom and school environment and supervise students in a variety of settings.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move classroom materials and equipment as needed.
  • Must be able to follow oral and written instructions and perform assigned duties with accuracy and professionalism.
  • Must be able to interact appropriately with students, families, staff, and members of the public.
