Job Title: Middle School English/Language Arts Teacher (Grade 6)
Position Summary
We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Middle School English/Language Arts Teacher to join our team, serving students in grade 6. The ideal candidate will foster a supportive and engaging learning environment that builds strong literacy foundations and encourages critical thinking, creativity, and a love for reading and writing during a pivotal stage of student development. In addition to classroom teaching, this position offers opportunities to participate in or lead extracurricular activities based on the candidate's interests and strengths.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, prepare, and deliver instructional activities for middle school ELA, aligning lessons with Indiana Academic Standards and student learning objectives.
- Teach a range of ELA skills appropriate to grades 6-8, including reading comprehension, literary analysis, writing (narrative, expository, persuasive), grammar, vocabulary development, and foundational research skills.
- Differentiate instruction to meet the developmental needs of early adolescent learners and a range of reading levels.
- Assess and evaluate student progress through tests, essays, presentations, and projects; provide timely feedback and support.
- Collaborate with fellow teachers, counselors, and administration to support student academic, social, and emotional development.
- Participate in professional development, team planning, and staff meetings.
- Support or lead extracurricular activities that align with the candidate's interests and student needs (opportunities are flexible and open).
- Maintain a positive, inclusive classroom environment that fosters respect, responsibility, and academic excellence.
- Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress and school events.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in English, Education, or a related field.
- Valid Indiana teaching certification/licensure covering middle school English/Language Arts.
- Experience teaching middle school ELA preferred; strong candidates from related grade bands will be considered.
- Understanding of early adolescent development and effective classroom management strategies for middle school learners.
- Strong organizational and planning skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to motivate and inspire students both inside and outside the classroom.
Preferred
- Experience with extracurricular leadership, student publications, drama, debate, literacy initiatives, or co-curricular programs that engage middle school students.
