Position Description

Position Title: 7-12 Alternative Learning Environment Teacher

Department: Assigned Building

Reports To: Principal or assigned supervisor

Evaluated By: Principal or assigned supervisor

JOB DESCRIPTION: 7-12 ALE Teacher - Multi-subject credential and/or Praxis 5511 achievement preferred.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (other duties may be assigned)

  • Teach district approved curriculum
  • Develop differentiated lessons appropriate for ALE students; small group, one- on-one, whole group, etc…
  • Provide nurturing, supportive, and positive classroom environment that encourages student responsibility
  • Participate in student placement and transition conferences
  • Assist in developing individualized Student Action Plans (SAP)
  • Maintain accurate student records
  • Adapt and modify instruction based on students' emotional, behavioral, academic and social status
  • Assist administration in implementing district policies and guidelines that govern student behavior and safety
  • Maintain an orderly and safe classroom environment
  • Collaborate with school and district personnel to ensure student success is maximized. Collaborate on resources, goals, objectives, etc…
  • Communicate with administration about classroom concerns
  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians about student progress
  • Partner with school counseling services and mental health providers in order to positively affect student success
  • Attend required staff and district meetings
  • Participate in school wide events
  • Complete and participate in required building and district professional development activities

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A valid Arkansas teacher license.
  • Highly Qualified Teacher, Multi-Subject credential and/or Praxis 5511 achievement preferred.
  • Experience and/or training in the guidance of at-risk youth.
  • Knowledge and experience in design and implementation of behavior modification techniques.
  • A demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of basic academic development.
  • Established pattern of professional growth.
  • Praxis 5511 achievement preferred.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY:

  • Knowledge of modern teaching methods and techniques.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple activities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing sufficient to express ideas, thoughts, lesson material and instructions clearly to students, community and staff.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively on inter- and intra-agency levels.
  • Ability to assess individual needs, establish realistic and appropriate goals and objectives, and design and implement a program for each student.
  • Ability to plan and conduct a system of continuous evaluation of each student's progress.
  • Ability to maintain suitable classroom control.
  • Ability to maintain suitable learning environment including appropriate planning and organization of classroom, and provide appropriate materials.
  • Ability to keep accurate class records and submit reports in a timely manner.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: of this position are, but not limited to, the following:

  • Assess individual needs of each student.
  • Establish realistic and appropriate goals and objectives for each student.
  • Consult with appropriate support personnel.
  • Maintain open communication with parents, agencies, and community groups.
  • Provide adequate information for substitutes.
  • Maintain responsibility for the school facility.
  • Follow specific standards, policies, and procedures of the building, district, and state.
  • Make decisions regarding health and safety needs of students, equipment, and facility.
  • Develop instructional schedule and performs assigned teaching responsibilities.
  • Direct aides.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Facility to sit a desk, conference table or in meeting rooms of various configurations for extended periods of time.
  • Facility and stamina to sit and stand alternately for up to 7 ½ hours.
  • Physical strength and emotional stamina sufficient to maintain control of behaviorally disordered students.
  • Facility to see and read lessons, books, rules, policies and other printed matter, with or without vision aids.
  • Facility to hear and understand speech at normal room levels and to hear and understand speech on the telephone.
  • Manual dexterity to operate a telephone, and operate audio-visual and other classroom equipment and teaching aids using both hands.
  • Physical agility to lift 25 pound to shoulder height and 50 pounds to waist height: and to bend, to stoop, to walk on uneven terrain, to climb stairs, and to reach overhead.
