Newtown Public Schools Position Title: Social Studies - Grade 8 (Long Term Sub) School of Vacancy: Newtown Middle School Starting Date: August 24 Ending Date: December Salary Range: Per Newtown Federation of Teachers Contract Responsibilities: Newtown Middle School is seeking a dynamic, student-centered Social Studies Teacher for Grade 8. The successful candidate will join a collaborative six-person interdisciplinary team committed to academic excellence and fostering a positive, inclusive middle school culture. Responsibilities include the following: Design and implement engaging, inquiry-based learning experiences that emphasize critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration. Deliver high-quality social studies instruction. Contribute to interdisciplinary team goals and collaborate in shared planning, assessment development, and student support initiatives. Maintain an organized, positive, and structured classroom environment that supports academic growth and student well-being. Communicate effectively with students, families, and colleagues. Perform additional professional responsibilities consistent with district expectations. Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have: Current Connecticut Social Studies Certification (K-8, 4-8, or 7-12). Commitment to contributing to a high-performing district culture focused on both academic excellence and student growth. Deep understanding of adolescent development and its impact on curriculum, instruction, and classroom culture. Technology expertise to enhance student understanding and engagement. Evidence of expertise in working with children in a heterogeneous classroom setting and ability to differentiate instruction including the use of small group instruction strategically. Effective classroom management skills that promote high expectations and positive relationships. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
