Northern Virginia Community College NOVA invites applications for qualified individuals to join our faculty to support the mission and vision of the largest institution of higher education in Virginia. The primary responsibility of a faculty member at NOVA is to provide quality instruction for the DMS program.
NOVA faculty are expected to excel in teaching strategies and classroom management that fully engage students in a classroom laboratory or online platform and engage students in individual conferences and related activities. NOVA faculty help students develop their interests and abilities to their fullest capacity in order to build stronger citizens within the community. All faculty must be available to teach day, evening, and weekend classes at any of the colleges campuses or off-site locations.
Duties and Tasks
Full-time teaching faculty members are responsible for teaching courses offered in traditional hybrid and distance learning formats. Full-time 9-month teaching faculty positions carry a normal teaching load of 12-15 credit hours and 15-20 contact hours per semester. Faculty members also serve as faculty advisors, serve on divisional and campus committees, participate in curriculum development, and maintain currency in their discipline.
Essential Functions
NOVA faculty are expected to meet assigned classes regularly, submit required records and reports in a timely manner, teach the courses using established texts, conduct requisite student conferences, hold required office hours, attend to assigned divisional and college duties, contribute to the development of the program of instruction, adhere to the statement on professional ethics in accordance with college policies, procedures, and regulations, answer emails in a responsible fashion, and maintain current competence in the particular discipline or field of specialization and advise students.
Minimum Qualifications

The ability to effectively teach DMS concepts in the classroom. Ability to use technology to enhance classroom instruction. Ability to use on-line resources and Learning Management Systems. Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and oral/written communication skills. Ability to teach DMS content in laboratory, clinical, and didactic settings. Knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy, 3D techniques, and pathophysiology. Strong interpersonal skills required for working with clinical preceptors, particularly in the areas of OB and AB. Must possess strong intermediate to advanced computer skills, knowledge of clinical tracking systems such as Trajecsys. Working knowledge of teaching using Canvas and/or other learning platforms. Current certification by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) and/or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI). Ability to teach a combination of day, evening, weekend, and online classes. Ability to be flexible to work at any of the colleges locations.
Required Qualifications
Bachelors degree in the teaching field or appropriately qualifying field OR an associates degree in the teaching field or appropriate qualifying field with demonstrated competency in the teaching field. Qualifying degree must be awarded by a regionally accredited institution. ARDMS registered sonographer with RDMS AB credentials. Minimum of 4 years related full-time or full-time equivalent Diagnostic Medical Sonography occupational experience.
Additional Considerations
ARDMS credentials in OBGYN. ARDMS credentials in RVT and/or RDCS. Experience teaching in the community college environment. Experience with and preparation for teaching culturally, linguistically, socio-economically, and academically diverse students at the college-level. Experience with a diverse campus population. Certification in teaching hybrid or online courses.
