Pay Grade: 114 Hourly Salary Range: $36.92 - $54.42 The successful candidates placement in the salary range will depend upon previous experience in a similar role. The placement shall not exceed the midpoint of the salary range, which is $45.673 per hourly.

DESCRIPTION / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS This position Oversees dispatch operations, mentoring, and supporting staff, ensuring timely phone responses. Maintains and upgrades the phone database, computer-aided dispatch system, and associated mapping functions. Coordinates with vendors to manage public safety equipment and repairs. Assists with developing department goals and policies, research public safety programs and technologies, and coordinates with other agencies for special events and public safety issues. Serves as the training coordinator, technology supervisor, or a backup dispatcher when needed.

Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Manages daily dispatch operations, including staffing and personnel concerns, scheduling, service complaints, and other administrative functions.
  • Trains and coaches new team members.
  • Monitors trainees progress throughout all phases of training, providing ongoing guidance and communication to ensure successful completion of training.
  • Supports dispatch operations.
  • Monitors radio channels for the City of Tempe and surrounding agencies, maintaining the status of in-field units.
  • Assists with overflow calls, breaks, and requests from officers in the field or other agencies.
  • Maintains the computer telephony integrated (CTI) phone database and administrative functions. Ensures appropriate user access.
  • Troubleshoots, services, repairs, and maintains computer and communication equipment, including printers, phones, monitors, networks, and other hardware.
  • Maintains and updates a business continuity plan for emergency response dispatching.
  • Serves as a liaison for special events with other police divisions, City departments, and other partnering agencies.
  • Coordinates with other public safety agencies and government entities regarding public safety issues.
  • Recommends goals and objectives for the department.
  • Assists with developing, implementing, and maintaining policies and procedures.
  • May perform responsibilities of a similar nature and level as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

Experience: Three (3) years of experience in public safety communications. Candidates must have the minimum amount of work experience. Years of experience are based upon a full-time work schedule (2,080 hours per year). The sum of an applicants full-time and/or part-time qualifying work experience must meet or exceed the stated minimum qualification. Education will not substitute for the required work experience; however, related unpaid and/or volunteer work experience may be used as qualifying work experience.

Education: Equivalent to an associate or vocational/technical school degree. The term "equivalent" means that directly related work experience exceeding the required work experience will substitute in equal one-year increments for college-level education (2 additional years for an associate degree and 4 additional years for a bachelors degree).

Professional Licensure and/or Certifications:

  • Terminal Operator Certification awarded by Arizona Department of Public Safety, obtain within one (1) week of hire.
  • Incident Command System (ICS) 100, ICS200, ICS700, and ICS800 certification, obtain within six (6) months of hire.
