916 Ink Book Builder VISTA

916 Ink is Sacramento's foremost youth creative writing and literacy tutoring nonprofit, as well as its only not-for-profit book publisher. Since 2011, 916 Ink has published more than 8,000 youth authors in nearly 400 anthologies and helped more than 400 students who were behind grade level in reading improve their literacy. We aim to transform Sacramento youth into strong readers, confident communicators, and published authors. Our programs increase literacy skills, improve vocabulary, teach empathy, positively impact social and emotional learning, and expand communication skills. We envision a Sacramento region where every child and teen is given access to a culturally relevant creative writing program that leads them to believe in themselves and to understand the power of the written word. Member Duties : This Book Builder VISTA position will strengthen 916 Ink's capacity to publish youth anthologies that amplify the voices of low-income and under-resourced students. The member will develop sustainable systems for manuscript review, editing, formatting, production timelines, volunteer coordination, and communication with workshop facilitators. They will also improve data management by creating tools to track student participation, literacy engagement, manuscript completion, consent forms, and program outcomes. In addition, the position will support scalable event planning systems for book release celebrations, including materials, family communication, volunteer practices, and inventory tools. Overall, the role builds long-term organizational infrastructure that advances literacy, youth confidence, self-expression, and anti-poverty outcomes across Sacramento County.
