Position Summary

JOB SUMMARY:

This position provides services to the Commandant of Cadets to mentor/instruct cadets in MMI's Fire Fighting/EMS Career Prep Program & Associates of Applied Science (AAS) in Fire Science degree track. Works under the direction of the AAS Fire Science Program Manager, AJ Rane Center for Leadership.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

In addition to adhering to general faculty policies and guidelines specified by the ACCS Board of Trustees, Faculty/Staff Handbook, President, and Commandant of Cadets, the successful candidate will also perform the following duties:

  • Teaching classes related to firefighter safety and survival, etc. by following the Alabama Fire College Curriculum and standards.
  • Exercise discretion and independent judgment while performing his/her duties.
  • Responsible for the delivery of mentoring/instruction to assist in preparing cadets for future careers in Fire Fighting and Emergency Medicine.
  • Assists the AAS Fire Science Program Manager of the A.J. Rane Center for Leadership in organizing career exploration and skills training for a future in Firefighting and EMS.
  • Assists the AAS Fire Science Program Manager in developing an activity schedule that meets the goals of the program.
  • Assists the AAS Fire Science Program Manager in recruiting and coordinating adjunct instructors.
  • Assists the AAS Fire Science Program Manager in managing training equipment and vehicle maintenance and replacement requirements.
  • Assists the AAS Fire Science Program Manager in outreach initiatives for student recruitment.
  • May require work in the evenings and some weekends.
  • Completes other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

REQUIRED EDUCATION, STANDARDS, AND TRAINING:

  • Minimum High School Diploma/GED; Associate degree preferred
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to deal effectively with students, faculty, staff, and the public.
  • Must pass state mandated background checks.
  • Ability to work independently and as an effective member of the Commandant of Cadets' team.

REQUIRED LICENSE, CERTIFICATION, OR SPECIAL CREDENTIALS:

Fire Science experience with:

  • Minimum of 15 years of experience as a practitioner in Fire Science.
  • Experience must include minimum of 10 years as a firefighting supervisor. Of which at least 5 or more years at the lieutenant or chief level with the remainder of the firefighter supervisory experience at the sergeant level or higher.
  • Experience working with community emergency response entities, including public health, emergency medical services, and law enforcement.
  • Documented leadership and supervisory experience in field.
  • Candidate must have completed the following certifications through Alabama Fire College or an equivalent certifying agency:
  • Fire Fighter I and II
  • Basic Pump Operations and Fire Apparatus Operator: Pumper
  • Fire & Emergency Services Instructor
  • Mobile Fire Suppression Training
  • Basic Fire Fighting Supervisor
  • Live Fire Instructor

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • EMT Basic, Advanced or Paramedic
  • NIMS ICS 300, 400
  • Technical Rescue Personnel: Common Passenger Vehicle Rescue Awareness, Operations, and Technician
  • Technical Rescue Personnel: Surface Water Rescue Awareness, Operations, and Technician
  • Technical Rescue Personnel: Confined Space Rescue Awareness, Operations, and Technician
  • Experience administering the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)

SALARY: Salary Schedule C3 01, $48,158-55,446 (10 months); based on relevant education and experience.

Sick Leave

All regular full-time non-instructional staff earns one day of sick leave which is the equivalent of 8 hours of sick leave per month. Unused sick leave is rolled over to the following year. Retirement

The TRS was established in 1939 to provide benefits to qualified persons employed by state-supported educational institutions. Responsibility for the management and administration of the TRS is vested in its Board of Control. The Boards of Control elect the Secretary-Treasurer who serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the RSA and is responsible for the day-to-day management of the RSA. Tuition Assistance

This tuition waiver program is designed for all full-time instructional and non-instructional employees of The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education and their dependents as defined under by policy. The program will be coordinated by each institution for employees within The Alabama College System and the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education. An application form for the tuition assistance program is available in the Human Resources office and should be completed prior to registration for classes.
