In 2006, two of Neurala's co-founders were sitting in a coffee shop when one of them said something that made the other spit out his coffee: "Someday we'll be able to run these AI models on a cell phone." At the time, that sounded absurd. AI required server racks, not handsets.

The founding team had spent years studying how biological brains learn - specifically how the complementary systems of the neocortex and hippocampus allow humans to acquire new knowledge quickly, continuously, and without forgetting. Their research, conducted for NASA, DARPA, and the Air Force Research Labs, pointed to a fundamental flaw in conventional deep learning.

The solution they developed - the Lifelong Deep Neural Network (L-DNN) - mimics the brain's dual-system architecture in software. It learns from a handful of examples, in seconds, on modest hardware, and continues learning throughout its entire deployed life without catastrophic forgetting. That technology is now protected by 19+ patents and has been embedded in enterprise products used by customers around the world.

In 2013, Neurala emerged from stealth and joined the Techstars program to begin commercial deployment. Today, Neurala's L-DNN technology is embedded inside products built by FLIR, Sony Semiconductor Solutions, IHI, and more - and we are actively working with integrators and OEM hardware companies to put L-DNN inside the next generation of intelligent products.

Dr. Max Versace

Neuroscientist and entrepreneur. Max led Neurala from founding through its commercial growth phase, combining deep research expertise with a hands-on approach to building the company.

Dr. Heather Ames

Cognitive scientist and operational leader. Heather shaped the organizational and commercial foundations of Neurala, translating neuroscience research into a scalable technology company.

Dr. Anatoli Gorchet

Computational neuroscientist and architect of L-DNN. Anatoli leads Neurala and holds primary responsibility for the patented technology at the core of every partnership.

The people behind the technology

Dr. Anatoli Gorchet

Co-Founder, CEO, and CTO

Anatoli has over 20 years of experience developing massively parallel software for neural computation, he is a pioneer in applying general-purpose computing on graphics processing units to neural modeling. Anatoli has spoken at every major neural network conference as well as at GTC, DARPA, The National Institute for Aerospace and a keynote at the Embedded Systems Conference. He holds several patents, has authored over 30 publications on neural networks, and advises Fortune 500 companies on how to use AI to improve operational efficiencies. He has a PhD in Cognitive and Neural Systems, Boston University; an MS in Computer Science. The highest he has been is 3122m above sea level and the lowest is 30m below sea level.

Dan Curtis

CFO

Dan brings over 25 years of financial and operations experience. His career includes diverse public and private company experience, from Fortune 500 to venture-backed start-ups, and Big Four public accounting. He is experienced in complex mergers and acquisitions, has managed debt and equity raises totaling over $150 million, and driven process and operational improvements and infrastructure build out. He was previously CFO at Vitrue (acquired by Oracle), Kova Solutions (acquired by Berkshire Hathaway) and SiteAdvisor (acquired by McAfee). He holds a BS, with honors, from Boston College. Dan spent his honeymoon at the US Open in Oakmont, PA.

Daniel Glasser

SVP of Operations

Daniel brings over 20 years of experience delivering technology solutions for Fortune 100 companies, government agencies, and startups and now puts that breadth to work keeping Neurala running at full speed. As SVP of Operations, he oversees the day-to-day engine of the company: from strategic planning and team development to revenue operations and the partnerships that bring Neurala's technology to market. He holds an MBA from Boston University's Questrom School of Management. When he's not working, he's an avid cyclist and is somewhere in year six of an unbroken NY Times crossword streak.

Jean-Raymond Raynal

Engineering Manager

JR has grown from software engineering intern to engineering leader over more than a decade at Neurala. Raised on a farm in France, he brings a practical, hands-on approach to problem solving and a deep appreciation for hard work. He earned an engineering degree in Computer Science with a concentration in Robotics from ENSEIRB-MATMECA (Bordeaux INP). At Neurala, he has helped develop core computer vision software infrastructure and build high-performing engineering teams. Outside work, JR enjoys time with his wife and three daughters, board games, and volunteering as an audio/video engineer at his church.

Natalya McLane

Director of Product Management

Natalya McLane has 20 years of experience shipping software products and helping teams work smarter along the way. Her work spans a wide range of industries: from on-premises software to SaaS platforms, and from mature technologies to emerging trends in the computer vision field. Known for streamlining processes, clearing roadblocks, and leading the people around her, Natalya combines breadth of experience and depth of understanding to craft successful product strategies. She holds BS and MS degrees in computer science, complemented by coursework in business and management. Outside of work, Natalya enjoys traveling, picking up new skills, and immersing herself in new environments.
