Position Summary
The Academic Advisor & Dean of Students plays a key role in supporting the academic success, well-being, and engagement of high school students. This position combines academic advising with leadership in student support, wellness, and school culture. Working collaboratively with the principal, counselors, teachers, and families, the Academic Advisor & Dean of Students helps implement systems that promote student achievement, social-emotional development, and equitable access to learning opportunities.
The role supports a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) approach and helps ensure appropriate implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and Section 504 accommodation plans. The position contributes to a safe, inclusive, and supportive school environment where students are encouraged to grow academically, socially, and personally.
Key Responsibilities
Academic Advising & Student Success
- Guide students in course selection, academic planning, and goal setting aligned with graduation requirements and post-secondary pathways in compliance with student EDPs.
- Monitor student academic progress and identify students who may benefit from additional academic or behavioral support.
- Collaborate with teachers and counselors to develop and implement academic intervention plans.
- Support students with post-secondary planning, including college, university, and career readiness.
- Meet regularly with students to review progress and support goal setting.
- Use student data to help inform interventions and support student success initiatives.
Student Support Systems (MTSS)
- Contribute to the schools Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) by identifying students who require targeted or intensive academic and behavioral support.
- Participate in student support team meetings and help coordinate appropriate interventions.
- Monitor the effectiveness of support strategies and communicate with staff and families regarding student progress.
- Collaborate with special education staff to support students with IEPs and 504 plans.
- Participate in 504 meetings and assist with academic and behavioral planning for students.
- Ensure accommodations and modifications are implemented consistently across classrooms according to 504 plans.
- Serve as a liaison between teachers, families, and support staff to ensure students receive appropriate services.
Student Well-Being & Social-Emotional Learning
- Promote student well-being through programs that support social-emotional learning (SEL), resilience, and positive decision-making.
- Provide mentorship and guidance to students experiencing academic, social, or personal challenges.
- Collaborate with counselors and support staff to connect students with appropriate services and resources.
- Support initiatives that foster belonging, respect, and a positive school climate.
Student Conduct & Behavioral Support
- Assist the Principal in addressing student conduct and discipline matters in accordance with school policies.
- Support restorative practices and behavioral interventions that promote student growth and accountability.
- Meet with students to reflect on behavioral concerns and develop improvement strategies.
- Maintain appropriate documentation related to student conduct and behavioral interventions.
- Work collaboratively with families to support positive behavioral outcomes.
Family Communication & Partnerships
- Maintain regular communication with parents/guardians regarding academic progress, student support plans, and school expectations.
- Participate in parent conferences and student support meetings.
- Provide families with guidance on academic planning and available student services.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Serve as a member of the schools student support and leadership teams.
- Collaborate with faculty and administration to strengthen systems that support student success and well-being.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of policies and programs that promote positive school culture.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology, or related field (Masters preferred).
- Valid teaching certification with a school counselor endorsement or administrator certificate.
- Experience working with high school students.
- Demonstrated experience with IEPs, 504 plans, and inclusive education practices.
- Knowledge of MTSS, social-emotional learning (SEL), and student support systems.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
