This is a hybrid position located on the Duluth campus, requiring 3 days on campus per week. A background in STEM is not required.

Overview: Swenson College of Science & Engineering (SCSE) academic advisors at the University of Minnesota Duluth assist students from admission to degree completion. Advisors maintain an assigned student caseload, playing a critical role in supporting students' academic development, career alignment and personal growth. Advisors actively participate in planning, developing and implementing initiatives designed to enhance advising practices, streamline processes, and elevate the overall undergraduate experience. Advisors work collaboratively with faculty and colleagues across campus to provide holistic support to students.

Responsibilities

Academic Advising, approximately 80% of this position

  • Provide proactive academic advising for students in the Swenson College of Science & Engineering
  • Engage with students through one-on-one appointments, drop-in advising, group advising, phone and email communication
  • Guide and support students through the process of creating personalized educational plans
  • Facilitate connections and referrals to resources for students (eg. Career Center, Health Services, One Stop, Academic Success Center, etc) to support their academic success
  • Encourage the engagement in co-curricular experiences (eg. internships and co-ops, research opportunities, learning abroad, civic engagement, leadership development, student groups, etc) informed by students' academic and career goals
  • Utilize campus and university student record systems to maintain confidential advising records
  • Maintain advanced understanding of SCSE curriculum, as well as collegiate and University policies & procedures
  • Serve as the liaison between SCSE academic advising and select academic departments

Program Operation, Development, & Student Engagement, approximately 15% of the position

  • Assist with new student orientation, to include delivering presentations and meeting with incoming students
  • Represent the college at recruitment events (eg. Admitted Student Day, Bulldog Friday, Campus Preview, Transfer Student Visit Day, etc.)
  • Assist in student success initiatives to improve retention rates, graduation rates, and student satisfaction
  • Coordinate select initiatives and programs in support of academic advising, retention and enhancing the student experience
  • Assist other advisors and director with special projects or other duties as assigned in support of the unit and college

Professional Development & Service, approximately 5% of the position

  • Participate in service activities, including committees and work groups within the college and across campus that support students and the academic advising profession
  • Stay current in the field of academic advising by pursuing professional development opportunities (on and off campus) to maintain knowledge of trends and best practices (e.g., membership in professional associations, attendance at conferences and workshops)

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • BA/BS degree plus at least two years of relevant experience, or masters degree

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated commitment to the value of higher education
  • Evidence of effective relationship-building skills
  • Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations and across differences
  • Experience with computer and database applications
  • Demonstrated organizational and planning skills
  • Ability to problem solve, prioritize competing priorities, and effectively manage time

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $50,000- $52,000 per year; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment: 100% Appointment
