The Position

The Academic Advisor supports current and prospective students by providing comprehensive academic advising services. This role guides students through major selection, course planning, registration, degree completion strategies, and transfer preparation. The advisor connects students with appropriate campus resources to support their academic and personal success. Additionally, the advisor contributes to college-wide initiatives aimed at enhancing student enrollment, retention, and completion, and actively participates in campus committees as needed.

Staff Duration: Full Time 12 months

What You Will Do

  1. Provides comprehensive, student-centered academic advising through both in-person and virtual sessions. Supports students in exploring majors, identifying academic and career goals, and developing personalized academic plans that address both short- and long-term objectives. Offers guidance on degree selection, course scheduling, registration, and meeting program requirements.

  2. Develops knowledge of and adheres to College policies and procedures that relate to degree requirements, courses, course selection, scheduling, pre-registration and registration, and college admission.

  3. Provides students with guidance on the transfer process, including the NJ Statewide Transfer Agreement, use of NJ Transfer tools, and requirements for successful transition to four-year institutions.

  4. Maintains accurate and detailed records of all student interactions using designated College systems. Documentation includes comprehensive advising notes, email correspondence, phone call logs, and records of unofficial graduation audits.

  5. Collaborates with campus departments to stay informed of available student services and resources, and refers students appropriately to support their academic and personal success.

  6. Assists in the coordination and execution of campus-wide events such as open houses, information sessions, enrollment sessions and transfer events.

  7. Facilitates individual and group advising sessions for incoming students, including first-year and transfer populations enrolling at OCC. Prepares for new student events by developing and updating academic plans, ensuring accuracy through schedule reviews and targeted outreach. Delivers engaging presentations to current students to promote effective course planning and encourage timely registration.

  8. Engages in ongoing professional development by participating in NACADA events and other training opportunities to enhance advising skills and maintain up-to-date knowledge of best practices.

  9. Serves on college committees and contributes to initiatives that support student success and institutional goals.

  10. Performs other duties as assigned.

The Successful Candidate Must Have

  1. Bachelors Degree.

  2. Two years of directly related experience in a student services, teaching or counseling area of an educational environment that required excellent interpersonal and student service skills.

  3. Demonstrated proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite; ability to create standard documents and reports and well as prior database experience.

  4. Ability to meet flexible work schedule requirements that include evenings and weekend hours in accordance with departmental needs.

Even Better If You Have

  1. Masters Degree.

  2. Two or more years of experience advising students at the college level.
