Job Summary

The purpose of the Student Support Services/TRIO academic advisor in University College is to support the retention and graduation of participants of the Student Support Services Program.

The advisor makes course recommendations and gives academic and personal advice to all assigned students so that they may persist at and graduate from Illinois State University. Advisors must provide accurate and realistic academic information and support to an assigned caseload. Advisors must accurately interpret and relay academic policies and requirements

ISU''s general education or the Illinois Articulation Initiative), as well as major/minor plans of study. Academic Advisors are expected to have broad and general knowledge about all majors/minors at Illinois State as well as knowledge of additional support services that may be of use to SSS/TRIO students.

Additional Information

This is a 12 months position with the possible annual appointment every year through the life of the grant that ends 8/31/2030.

Salary Rate / Pay Rate

$44,004 annual salary

Required Qualifications

  1. Bachelor''s degree

  2. Experience with developing, creating, implementing, and facilitating programs as well as workshops for first-generation students.

  3. Experience interacting effectively with first-generation students and colleagues from diverse ethnic backgrounds.

  4. Experience working with students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, have identified disability, and/or first-generation students.

  5. Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to make effective public

presentations. Programming and advising experience that enhances the social and cultural

capital students bring to their college experience.

  1. Excellent interpersonal skills including listening, communication, and teamwork.

  2. Ability to multi-task and produce quality work under deadlines in a fast-paced environment; organizational skills; flexibility in a changing administrative model. Ability to

work with diverse populations of students.

  1. Working knowledge of basic office software (word processing, appointment manager, excel,

PowerPoint, e-mail systems, spreadsheets, databases, etc.)

  1. Ability to work independently to get task completed but also work cooperatively as a team within an advisement staff with a learner-centered and service-oriented philosophy.

  2. Evidence of a positive professional demeanor that contributes to a positive and fulfilling work environment.

  3. Evidence of understanding of the issues facing today''s college students as it impacts their

academic success.

  1. Must have a valid driver''s license

Preferred Qualifications

Master''s degree, preferably in Education, College Student Personnel or related field.

Work Hours

Monday-Friday 8:00 AM-4:30 PM with some evening, weekends, and overnight trips.

Functional Expectations

Must be able to complete the following with or without reasonable accommodation:

  1. Remain at a workstation for extended periods

  2. Move about in various locations on and off campus as needed to complete day-to-day work

  3. Effectively communicate on a daily basis
