Description
The Freshman Studies academic advisor will serve as an advisor for all first-year students. The academic advisor will engage and guide students to ensure a successful transition to college life.
Examples of Duties
- Cultivate relationships with the campus departments/resources available within the campus community.
- Encourage the personal motivation and work ethic necessary for optimal student achievement
- Assess personal, social or emotional issues which may hinder academic success and make referrals to appropriate professionals as required
- Compose reports as required
- Implement outreach efforts as needed
- Attend meetings as well as facilitate meetings as needed
Typical Qualifications
Masters degree in counseling or a related field is preferred. Candidate must have experience in counseling students.
Supplemental Information
- Access, organize, and maintain updated record concerning students performance.
- Coach students for a smooth transition into Hampton by providing necessary resources (e.g. free tutoring, career advisement, access and learning, etc.)
- Document counseling sessions and student progress using Navigate 360
- Become knowledgeable of University policies and procedures, academic requirements, campus resources, student life, and support services
- Advise freshman students with mid-term deficiency
- Advise freshman academic probation students
- Plan and coordinate activities for the freshman class
- Assist with The Pre-College Program and responsibilities
- Ability to manage and oversee a work project, from idea to implementation
- Advise undecided freshman when necessary
- Work a flexible work schedule during peak times
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director
