This is an in-office position at the Ogden campus with some opportunities for remote work.

Pay Grade E31 Salary FLSA Exempt Job Summary/Basic Function

The John B. Goddard School of Business & Economics provides quality education for career-oriented students. Degree programs may be found in the WSU catalog. The Academic Advisor provides a vital link for entering freshmen, declared majors, transfer, and returning students at the undergraduate level within the Goddard School.

This position provides academic advising services, maintains student records, and delivers accurate information and advice to students about all majors, minors, course options, study abroad, and transfer credit within the Goddard School of Business & Economics (GBSE).

Responsibilities of an Academic Advisor I include but are not limited to:

  • Advising students about General Education, and University graduation requirements which include utilizing student placement scores and academic records regarding appropriate courses
  • Serving as an initial point of contact for students interested in GSBE programs
  • Advising current and prospective students on academic program planning for one or more majors and/or minors in GSBE. This advisement mostly occurs via in-person or virtual through individual appointments or drop-in hours but could include but not be limited to: group advising, email, presentations, etc.
  • Evaluating records of students seeking admission into GSBE programs which includes administering BSAD 2899 & ECON 2899
  • Understanding and following all processes and procedures within GSBE & the Goddard School Advising Center.
  • Making presentations to students, staff, and faculty regarding GSBE curriculum, processes, and procedures.
  • Maintaining skills and knowledge needed to complete their responsibilities successfully which include but not limited to: active membership in National Academic Advising Association (NACADA), Utah Advising Associations (UAA), UAAC (University Academic Advisory Council), trainings available from Weber State University (WSU) and/or GSBE, other professional development opportunities as deemed appropriate by department, etc.
  • Participate in recruitment efforts at both a University and GSBE level which include but are not limited to: Weber Welcome, Purple Carpet, Lunch with Leaders, outreach to newly admitted students, etc.
  • Participate in retention efforts which include but are not limited to: Starfish (flags, Semester to Semester, etc), Bounce Back program, outreach to students that have withdrawn, etc.
  • Administrative duties such as but not limited to: up-dating Grad Maps, Planning Guide Flyers, and catalog copy on a yearly basis, processing exceptions in CatTracks, processing student program of study changes, creation of Financial Aid Plans, transfer of credit appeals, assist with articulation agreements as requested, etc.
  • Serving on University-wide and GSBE committees as appropriate (e.g. UAAC, GSBE Faculty-Staff-Advising Collaboration, GSBE Curriculum, Retention, NSO, etc.)

Required Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • One year of full-time college employment preferably in enrollment services (academic advising, registration, admissions, or financial aid), student services or the equivalent.
  • Computer skills which include word processing, spreadsheets, and database applications.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred:

  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • The ability to work with a variety of personalities and backgrounds.
  • The ability to work collegially with Goddard School academic departments, WSU academic advisors, and other people (WSU and external) is related to the position. The ability to be empathetic to student situations while maintaining academic integrity and adherence to accreditation requirements.
  • The ability to retain knowledge concerning university and department policies, think critically and make appropriate judgment calls pertaining to the application and communication of university and department policies.
  • The demonstrated ability and willingness to work with computer-related applications used in enrollment services.
  • The ability and willingness to become a skilled user of SCT Banner, CatTracks and other technological tools upon which the University community will increasingly rely.
