Job Duties
Position Specific Duties
o The Academic Advisor I, under supervision of a director, provides quality academic advising to current and prospective undergraduate students at Texas State University.
o Provide accurate and consistent information about academic planning and degree requirements, pre-majors and admission requirements for majors
o Provide institutional assistance for students in major exploration, parallel planning, major change, major foreclosure, and other transitions
o Contribute to team goals in outreach efforts to at-risk student populations
o Clearly explain complex information related to institutional policies and procedures
o Coordinate, plan, and prepare for advising sessions
o Engage with undergraduate students in-person, virtually, and over the phone
o Help undergraduate students define and develop realistic educational and career goals
o Maintain confidential student records through accurate and thorough documentation
o Maintain collaborative relationships with academic units and university partners
o Acknowledge and research student concerns, collaborate with appropriate stakeholders, and advocate for solutions with a commitment to fairness and integrity
o Refer undergraduate students to appropriate resources for assistance
o Participate in university efforts toward recruitment and retention such as Bobcat Day and New Student Orientation
o Provide recommendations for continuous improvement of advising services and integrate practices aimed at improving the student experience
o Commit to ongoing professional development and attainment of knowledge regarding industry advancements and best practices in academic advising
o Contribute to professional development initiatives for the Texas State Advising Network
o Provide clerical assistance as needed
o Other duties as assigned
