Academic Aide (K-8)

Reporting to: Elementary & Middle School Principal FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Schedule: 12-month position; Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Position Overview

The Charter School of Educational Excellence (CSEE) is seeking an exceptional, student-centered Academic Aide who is passionate about education and committed to ensuring the success of every child. This position requires an energetic, proactive, and highly organized individual who can build strong relationships with students while maintaining high expectations for behavior, academics, and school culture.

The successful candidate will play a vital role in supporting instruction, maintaining a safe and structured learning environment, and reinforcing the school''s expectations throughout the day. This individual must be flexible, dependable, and willing to support students and staff in grades Kindergarten through Grade 8.

This is a highly visible position requiring strong classroom management skills, professionalism, and the ability to confidently supervise students in classrooms, hallways, cafeterias, playgrounds, on field trips, during arrival and dismissal, and at all school-sponsored activities. The Academic Aide will report directly to the building principals.

Essential Responsibilities

Student Supervision & Classroom Management

  • Maintain a safe, structured, and positive learning environment throughout the school day.

  • Demonstrate exceptional classroom management skills while supervising students in Kindergarten through Grade 8.

  • Effectively manage student behavior by consistently reinforcing school-wide expectations, routines, and procedures.

  • Maintain active supervision at all times by continuously monitoring students, circulating throughout assigned areas, and addressing behaviors immediately.

  • Supervise students during arrival, dismissal, lunch, recess, hallway transitions, assemblies, field trips, emergency drills, and other school activities.

  • Escort students safely throughout the building while maintaining orderly transitions.

  • Build positive relationships with students while holding them accountable for meeting behavioral and academic expectations.

  • De-escalate student conflicts using professionalism and restorative practices.

  • Immediately communicate concerns involving student behavior, safety, or well-being to administration.

Instructional Support

  • Supervise students in grades K-8 across all academic and specialty classes to ensure a safe, orderly, and productive learning environment.

  • Monitor student behavior and engagement during classroom instruction, transitions, and other school activities.

  • Support students in remaining focused, attentive, and on task while following the direction of the classroom teacher.

  • Reinforce school-wide expectations for behavior, safety, and classroom routines.

  • Provide supervision during whole-group, small-group, and independent learning activities under the direction of the classroom teacher.

  • Communicate student concerns or notable observations to the classroom teacher.

  • Assist students in remaining engaged, focused, and on task during instruction.

  • Assist with maintaining a positive, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment.

  • Provide classroom supervision and coverage as assigned to ensure continuity of student oversight during teacher absences or other school needs.

  • Differentiate support based on individual student needs while maintaining high academic expectations.

  • Support teachers and assist with classroom coverage as needed.

School Operations

  • Assist with classroom preparation, organization, and daily instructional needs.

  • Prepare instructional materials, organize classroom resources, and distribute supplies.

  • Maintain neat, organized, and welcoming classroom environments.

  • Update bulletin boards and student displays that celebrate learning and student achievement.

  • Assist with inventory, organization, and maintenance of instructional materials.

  • Make copies and prepare classroom materials as requested.

  • Maintain student confidentiality at all times.

School Culture & Professionalism

  • Serve as a positive role model by demonstrating professionalism, integrity, respect, and accountability.

  • Build strong, respectful relationships with students, staff, and families.

  • Support the school''s mission, vision, and core values while contributing to a positive school culture.

  • Demonstrate flexibility by assisting wherever needed throughout the school day.

  • Participate in school events, after-school programs, family engagement activities, and professional development opportunities as assigned.

  • Collaborate effectively with teachers, administrators, counselors, support staff, and specialists.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Principal or administrative team.

Qualifications Required

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience working with children in an educational setting.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise and manage students in Kindergarten through Grade 8.

  • Strong classroom management skills with the ability to establish structure, maintain consistency, and redirect student behavior appropriately.

  • Ability to confidently supervise upper elementary and middle school students while maintaining high expectations for student conduct.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills.

  • Ability to multitask and adapt in a fast-paced school environment.

  • Demonstrated professionalism, reliability, and strong work ethic.

  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team while also working independently when needed.

  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive, equitable, and student-centered learning environment.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate''s degree or college coursework in Education or a related field.

  • Experience supporting diverse learners, including students with disabilities and English Language Learners (ELLs).

  • Knowledge of restorative practices and positive behavior intervention strategies.

  • Experience working in an urban charter school setting.

  • Ability to frequently walk throughout the building and supervise students indoors and outdoors.

  • Ability to safely supervise students during recess, field trips, emergency drills, and school-wide events.
