Position Subject to Availability of Budgeted Funds

Salary commensurate with degree and experience

The role of the Academic and Financial Aid Advisor is to provide comprehensive advising to Dare students along with providing basic financial aid support. A multifaceted role that includes working with prospective and currently enrolled students in terms of advising and financial aid along with serving as the liaison to the testing center.

The Academic and Financial Aid Advisor receives direction and supervision from the Director of Advising and Student Success.

Examples of Duties

Advising:

  • Serve as academic advisor to assigned advisees.
  • Provide academic advising to walk-in students; new students; students without assigned advisors or students assigned to advisors at other campus locations.
  • Serve as CCP liaison to local high schools and as academic advisor to assigned high school CCP students.
  • Responsible for registration, maintenance of records and monitoring of enrolled CCP students per COA and NCDPI guidance and policies.
  • Assist students with filing necessary paperwork such as substitution forms, graduation applications and Datatel evaluation updates.
  • Disseminate transfer information to new and current students as needed.
  • Answer general admissions inquiries.
  • Guide students through enrollment process, explaining different programs of study.
  • Advise students after placement testing.
  • Participate in all SSEM activities to stay current on procedures and changes.
  • Communicate with Registrars Office and other college personnel at COA - Elizabeth CIty to assist students in troubleshooting potential problems.
  • Plan/conduct new student orientation sessions.
  • Attend appropriate meetings and serve on committees, as requested.
  • Assist with advisor training.
  • Serve as a liaison for transfer partnerships.
  • Serve as director in the absence of the Director.
  • Teach ACA classes, if requested.
  • Assist with planning and staffing of events, i.e. Open House, Financial Aid Awareness Week.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Financial Aid:

  • Assist with the facilitating of financial aid by:
  • Providing general information to students regarding financial aid programs, eligibility requirements and application processes while referring specific inquiries to the financial aid office in Elizabeth City.
  • Assisting students making late charges to the bookstore.
  • Explaining financial aid application process and facilitating the submission of verification paperwork.
  • Provide Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) information to students, help them to understand their options and what effects withdrawing or failing will have on their eligibility and assist them in submitting SAP appeals.
  • Ensure institutional compliance with all federal and state requirements.

Typical Qualifications

Required:

  • A Masters degree from a regionally accredited college or university with major course work in the Social Science field, Adult Education, Post-Secondary Educational Leadership, Business Administration or a related field.
  • Experience in a post-secondary educational setting.

Preferred:

  • Experience in a post-secondary advising office and as a financial aid advisor.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Ability to:

  • Interpret and apply pertinent college, federal and state policies, procedures, rules and regulations of student financial assistance programs.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Tactfully respond to requests for information regarding Admissions/Financial Aid.
  • Research and compile student information.
  • Maintain inventory of various forms and supplies.
  • Maintain the security of confidential materials.
  • Update financial aid forms and information for dissemination when appropriate.
  • Calculate and prepare accurate reports and worksheets.
  • Type and word process at a speed necessary for successful job performance.
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Prioritize work for timely completion.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
