Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Must have strong communication and customer service skills and enthusiasm for learning and supporting students of diverse backgrounds and needs. Must maintain confidentiality of all student information (written and spoken). Must be detail-oriented and comfortable working online and in person. Must be familiar with computer applications appropriate to tutoring subject (Excel, CAD, etc.) as well as Microsoft applications, particularly Outlook and Word. We will provide training in web-based software appropriate to modes of tutoring (Canvas, Teams, Zoom, Penji, etc.).

Supervision

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports to the Academic Success Center Manager and lead tutor, when appropriate. SUPERVISION GIVEN: Mentor and model tutoring excellence for Level 3 Tutors, meeting with them and with Academic Success Center Managers and director to discuss issues that arise from sessions.

Job Function

Provide tutoring and model learning regulation strategies for students in identified subject areas in the Academic Success Center, contribute to support of special needs students, develop tutoring resources, and participate in outreach projects.

Job Responsibilities

  • Tutor students in content area individually and in small groups, both online and on campus.
  • Provide limited computer assistance to help students navigate their computer-mediated learning.
  • Develop and maintain familiarity with Macomb course outcomes in your area(s) and align tutoring approaches with Macomb course outcomes and progressions.
  • Assist students in identifying learning challenges, developing enhanced strategies for self-regulated learning, and creating a support network for long-term college success.
  • Provide 1:1 tutoring support for students with special needs and/or accommodations.
  • Inform students about adaptive technology when appropriate and ensure modes of tutoring and use of assistive technology adheres to ADA specifications and promotes inclusive learning.
  • Document tutoring activities, including attendance, session descriptions, and student progress using Penji.
  • Collaborate with tutor colleagues and supervisors to develop, evolve, and implement quality tutoring methods.
  • Maintain familiarity with online and asynchronous resources and recommend updates to tutor colleagues or ASC manager.
  • Collaborate with lead tutors and ASC manager on special outreach and tutoring projects, including classroom visits, when necessary.
  • Assist with class visits, department tours, and other outreach events.
  • Maintain rapport with students and alert supervisors of student learning issues and communicate these using early intervention protocols (e.g. Maxient) as directed.
  • Participate in regular paid observation, review, and professional development to achieve College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) certification training, and (once certified) maintain appropriate certification.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education

BA or BS from a regionally accredited college or university or equivalent college credits/professional experiences in subject area (transcript or proof of professional expertise required if hired).

Qualifications

Preference given to applicants with prior tutoring, teaching, or community resource experience.
