The Controller Division is seeking to hire a highly motivated, energetic, and customer-focused Accountant 1 to join the Travel and Relocation (CNTL-TAR) group, supporting the Relocation Team. The Travel and Relocation group ensures LANL's workforce mobility through compliant, cost-effective, and employee-focused travel and relocation services. The group provides end-to-end administration of business travel reimbursements, reservations, and domestic/international relocations in alignment with DOE, IRS, and LANL policies. This position will report to the CNTL-TAR Group Leader and focus on coordinating, processing and reviewing relocation-related reimbursements while ensuring a smooth transition experience for employees. The ideal candidate takes ownership of their work, exercises sound judgment when addressing complex issues, and maintains a high level of accountability, accuracy, and attention to detail in a demanding environment. This position may be rotated across functional teams within the group or division to support operational needs and perform other related duties as assigned within the same job level. This position requires the selected candidate to be onsite at Management's request and/or as needed.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Administers employee relocation reimbursements for new hires, reassignments, and terminations in accordance with DOE and IRS guidelines, accounting standards and lab policies
  • Manage relocation expense submissions, ensuring compliance with a complex set of federal regulations and Laboratory policies, and overseeing the accurate use of reimbursement systems and online travel tools.
  • Serve as a key point of contact for internal and external stakeholders, including Human Resources, hiring organizations, household goods carriers, relocation vendors, and other service providers to facilitate relocation support and resolve issues that arise throughout the process. Maintain strong internal controls, ensuring proper accounting treatment of all transactions, and providing guidance and solutions for a variety of complex reimbursement and policy-related issues.
  • Coordinates directly with employees, hiring managers, and third-party relocation vendors to streamline the relocation process.
  • Reviews and documents relocation-related expenses, ensuring compliance with taxability rules, cost allowability, and funding source accuracy.
  • Maintains detailed records for audit purposes and supports financial transparency through monthly reporting and reconciliation.


What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Travel Experience

Experience supporting travel, relocation, disbursement, or other financial operations involving complex reimbursement and compliance requirements.

Accounting Experience

Knowledge of accounting/financial concepts and principles to include application of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and proper application of internal controls for a disbursement operation and the ability to identify process improvements and developing strategies and procedures to implement and improve processes and controls. Experience performing reconciliations, maintaining supporting documentation, and assisting with audit-related activities.

Problem Solving

Knowledge and demonstrated experience researching, gathering, analyzing data, summarizing results, resolving problems and issues both independently and as a team member.

Compliance, Customer Service, Teamwork

Knowledge and experience interpreting federal travel regulations. Demonstrated ability in providing strong customer service with excellent interpersonal skills; Demonstrated experience effectively interacting with customers, staff, management and stakeholders. Demonstrated organizational skills with the ability to prioritize assignments, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Communication

Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively achieve decisions and consensus on significant actions, projects, program goals, and/or objectives. Proven ability in leading initiatives for change and improvements.

Technology

Demonstrated proficient use of computer software applications such as Microsoft Office Suite. Experience using automated reservations and travel expense reimbursement systems. Experience working with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems such as Oracle Financials or similar financial management systems.

Education/Experience:

  • Position requires a bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, Business Administration or a related field combined with 2 years relevant experience; or the equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience directly related to the occupation.
  • The starting salary will be determined based on the candidate's education, years of experience, internal equity, and market factors.


Desired Qualifications:

  • Travel Regulations and experience with DOE regulations regarding external assignments and conference travel
  • Working knowledge and experience with Concur Travel and Expense
  • In-depth knowledge of LANL Travel policies
  • Working knowledge of the Federal Travel Regulation
  • Experience utilizing automation and AI-enabled tools such as Microsoft Power Automate, Microsoft Copilot, or similar technologies to improve business processes, reporting, workflow efficiency, and customer service operations.

Work Environment:

Work Location: The work location for this position is telework and is located in Los Alamos. Telework is defined as working from offsite but within 2hours ground commute of this location. Reporting onsite may be periodically necessary. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
