Job Description

The City of Chesapeake is seeking a detail-oriented, customer service-focused Accountant I to join the Chesapeake Police Department.

As an Accountant I, you will support departmental operations through accurate financial processing, procurement coordination, budgeting, grant and capital project support, asset management, and financial reporting. This Accountant role is ideal for someone who values precision, enjoys problem-solving, and thrives in a collaborative, service-driven environment.

As an Accountant you will provide accounting support and customer service while:

  • Processing accounting functions across multiple funding sources, including procurement, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, budgeting, revenue, grants, capital projects, and seized/forfeited assets
  • Supporting grant and capital project management, including budgeting, reconciliations, reporting, Council agenda materials, general ledger entries, and closeouts
  • Serving as the Accountant subject matter expert in procurement, ensuring compliance with City, State, and Federal policies
  • Assisting with procurement documentation such as RFQs, IFBs, RFPs, and sole source requests
  • Managing asset tracking, including additions, disposals, and annual fixed asset inventory
  • Overseeing forfeited and seized asset accounting, including reconciliations, tracking, and reporting
  • Preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for management and Finance

Required Qualifications

Vocational/Educational Requirement:

Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree in accounting or a closely related field.

Experience:

In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of two years of related, full-time equivalent experience.

Special Certifications and Licenses:

Depending on department operational needs, may require valid driver's license and driving record in compliance with the City Driving Standards.

Special Requirements:

Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.

Preferred Qualifications

Accounting and procurement experience in a local government agency.

Grant and Capital Project financial management.

Experience in the following software applications:

  • Sage
  • Outlook, Excel, Word, Adobe/Kofax, Laserfiche
