Job Summary
The Staff Accountant I is responsible for supporting the organization’s financial operations through accurate financial reporting, account reconciliations, journal entries, and month-end close activities. This role plays a key part in maintaining the integrity of the general ledger, supporting budgeting and audit processes, and ensuring timely and accurate financial data across the organization. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, self-motivated, and able to effectively manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with daily, weekly, and monthly accounting activities to maintain accurate general ledger records.
- Support the month-end close process, including preparation and posting of manual journal entries.
- Perform account reconciliations to ensure transactions are properly recorded and discrepancies are identified and resolved timely.
- Monitor and analyze financial variances to identify trends, inconsistencies, and potential issues.
- Maintain detailed and organized documentation of accounting entries, reconciliations, and financial reports to support audit readiness and compliance.
- Assist with preparation of annual budgets and financial forecasts.
- Support quarterly and annual external audit requests and related documentation needs.
- Collaborate with cross-functional departments to ensure accurate recording and reporting of financial activity.
- Assist with ad hoc accounting projects and help resolve issues arising from day-to-day accounting operations.
- Identify opportunities for process improvements and assist with process documentation initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, accounting standards, and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the CFO.
Required Skills
- Working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Understanding of accounting terminology, financial reporting concepts, and accounting tools.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to interact professionally with executives, board members, staff, and external stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively within a team environment.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion with sensitive financial information.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred.
- Two (2) to four (4) years of accounting or related financial experience preferred.
- Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit for extended periods and work at a computer, including participation in virtual meetings.
- Ability to perform repetitive tasks such as typing and data entry.
- Ability to function effectively in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment with frequent interruptions, changing priorities and deadlines.
- Occasional evening and weekend work may be required.
- Occasional travel may be required as determined by the Chief Financial Officer.
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
