Position Information
Description & Details: The Accountant I is responsible for performing accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, reconciliation and fiscal management functions for the NDSU Bookstore, Memorial Union and Office of Student Engagement. This position ensures the accuracy and integrity of financial records, compliance with institutional policies and audit requirements and the timely preparation of financial reports that support operational and strategic decision-making. The role also provides leadership and supervision to accounting student staff while maintaining strong internal controls and exceptional customer service for both internal and external stakeholders.Review, reconcile and adjust general ledger; analyze, recognize and review revenue; prepare and analyze monthly financials; maintain accounting records, databases and supporting documentation in accordance with established accounting principles; develop, submit, monitor and maintain annual budget; prepare and submit monthly sales tax; prepare annual reports and documentation required for audits and financial reviews; provide recommendations on financial performance.
Prepare and monitor purchase orders and purchasing activity; process and reconcile accounts payable; reconcile accounts receivable balances and aging reports; review and reconcile customer account activity; approve and process employee reimbursement and expense payments; submit accounting entries, journal entries and supporting documents to Accounting Services; process interdepartmental charges and billing transactions; manage all aspects of purchase cards; track and monitor capital expenditures and renovation-related costs; assist management with operational and financial analysis projects.
Complete and maintain inventory records and reporting; monitor compliance with state, institutional and departmental policies; manage scholarship, award and special funding records as assigned; track student employment and participant-related financial information when needed; participate in special project and perform additional duties as assigned.
Supervise accounting student and administration staff as needed; assign, monitor and evaluate employee work to ensure accuracy, efficiency and compliance with established procedures; provide training, coaching and performance feedback to staff; develop and maintain departmental procedures and job instructions; review accounting processes and recommend operational improvements; ensure continuity of operations during employee absences and peak workload periods; foster collaborative, service-oriented work environment focused on accountability and continuous improvement.
Ensure compliance with accounting standards, university policies, audit requirements and applicable regulations; maintain confidentiality of sensitive financial and personal information; support workplace safety initiatives and identify opportunities to improve operational safety; provide exceptional customer service to internal departments, vendors, students and other stakeholders; promote a culture of integrity, accountability and ethical financial management.
Work Schedule: 40 hours per week. Not eligible for remote work.
Hiring Range: $52,000-$56,000+ Depending on experience
Pay is based on several factors, including budget, labor market, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and/or certification and other business considerations.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelors degree in accounting with a minimum of internship work experience;
OR Associate Accounting degree and minimum two years of work experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelors degree in accounting with a strong computer background;
Experience and knowledge of current accounting software.
