About the Agency

The Mississippi Development Authority (MDA) is the states lead economic and community development agency. MDA recruits new companies to Mississippi, helps existing companies expand and provides support to foster growth and new opportunities in a variety of areas, including energy, small and minority business, trade, film, retiree recruitment and more. Additionally, MDA attracts millions of visitors to the state each year through Visit Mississippi, the tourism division of the agency. MDA also supports pass-through funding and provides support for a variety of grant programs and non-profits, such as Innovate Mississippi and Mississippi Main Street Association.

About the Position

This is a time-limited position. The Accountant II position provides vital financial support to the Energy and Natural Resources Division by overseeing, managing, and reporting on all aspects of state and federal grant financial activity. The role requires a thorough understanding of accounting principles and familiarity with administrative regulations governing federally funded grant programs. Responsibilities include ensuring compliance with federal grant requirements, maintaining precise financial records, and preparing accurate financial reports. The incumbent must demonstrate strong attention to detail and sound financial management to guarantee funds are utilized according to the objectives of the grant. Effective communication with internal staff, contractors, and subrecipients is essential to support program goals and uphold the trust of Department of Energy grant providers and other stakeholders. Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: • Examine reimbursement requests, handle account management, prepare, confirm, and process invoices and travel documents, and accurately assign costs to grants or programs. • Create and maintain spreadsheets as well as precise financial records for federal grants according to requirements. • Evaluate budget allocations, spending, and fund balances to ensure they are correct and comply with budgeting standards and offer basic financial oversight for all grant funds. • Regularly reconcile accounts associated with grants, spot discrepancies or inconsistencies, and make necessary corrections to keep financial records accurate. • Track grant budgets within Mississippi's MAGIC system to guarantee compliance with relevant regulations; introduce new internal procedures and controls as needed. • Work with MDA's Accounting and Finance Division to set up account budgets and manage multiple budgets and expenditure transfers. • Prepare federal financial reports promptly and handle grant close-out tasks including required reporting. • Offer financial expertise and partner with ENRD management on creating and adjusting budget proposals and preparing various required reports. • Investigate information requests from ENRD staff, subrecipients, and vendors. • Travel for conferences and training sessions for program and system knowledge enhancement. • Fulfill additional duties and special projects as assigned.

What youll need to be Successful

Demonstrate strong attention to detail and sound financial management, excellent written and oral communication skills, knowledge of general accounting principles and administrative regulations governing federally funded grant programs, experience in managing invoices, coding, federal reporting and tracking funds, and proficiency in Excel and Microsoft Word

Preferred Qualifications
