The Accountant is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records and supporting the fiscal operations of the City/Municipality. This position performs accounting, budgeting, reporting, and auditing functions in accordance with governmental accounting standards, municipal policies, and applicable federal and state regulations. The Accountant works closely with department leaders, finance staff, and external auditors to ensure proper stewardship of public funds.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Prepare and maintain general ledger entries, reconciliations, and financial records.
Process and review accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and journal entries.
Assist with preparation of annual budgets, amendments, and financial forecasts.
Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.
Reconcile bank accounts and municipal funds.
Monitor expenditures and revenues to ensure compliance with approved budgets.
Assist with year-end closing activities and annual external audits.
Maintain accounting records in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) requirements.
Prepare reports and documentation for grants, state reporting, and regulatory compliance.
Analyze financial data and provide recommendations to management.
Support internal controls and ensure compliance with municipal policies and procedures.
Respond to inquiries from departments, vendors, auditors, and the public regarding financial matters.
Maintain confidentiality of sensitive financial information.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
QualificationsEducation & Experience
Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
Minimum of 25 years of accounting experience preferred.
Governmental or municipal accounting experience strongly preferred.
Experience with fund accounting and budget management preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of GAAP and governmental accounting standards (GASB).
Strong understanding of budgeting, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software systems.
Ability to analyze financial data and prepare accurate reports.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple priorities.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
Certifications (Preferred)
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred but not required.
Certified Government Finance Officer (CGFO) or related certification is a plus.
Work Environment
Primarily office environment within a municipal government setting.
Standard business hours with occasional overtime during budget season, audits, or fiscal year-end.
