Under the direction of the Manager, Reporting, Budgeting & Assurance, this position provides exceptional accounting knowledge and activity to support the provision of quality service to members of the college and users of the college's financial information. The Accountant reviews, analyzes, and reconciles asset, liability and revenue and expense accounts on an ongoing basis, and prepares reports and budgets. Working as a member of a team the Accountant's initiative and pride in performance will contribute positively to a respectful and constructive work environment.
TYPICAL DUTIES
- Ensures data quality within all accounting records to meet institutional reporting and accountability requirements and national accounting standards;
- Responds and provides guidance to senior administrative staff and managers, as well as Finance members, to enable timely response and resolution to issues arising as a result of system or business process challenges within established college policies and guidelines;
- Responds to requests for data and reports from internal and external partners;
- Reviews, analyzes and reconciles asset (including bank), liability, revenue and expense accounts, including budget, to ensure integrity of information; makes adjusting entries as necessary;
- Develops or uses spreadsheets and databases for complex projects involving information from various systems to produce reports for management and/or government agencies;
- Extracts information from general ledger to facilitate account analysis, budget variance analysis, and preparation of financial reports;
- Prepares statistical reports, Ministry reports, tax returns (withholdings, charity), periodic financial reports and schedules for Board reports and financial statements;
- Prepares year-end entries, working papers, reconciliations requested by auditors, lead sheets and financial statements;
- Accounts for investments including calculations of discounts and premiums;
- Uses judgment, creative problem solving and ingenuity to evaluate issues in order to resolve concerns or complaints received in a satisfactory manner;
- Tactfully imparts the need to internal, including college management, and external individuals for them to follow proper procedures and policies, where they may not agree with the need to do so;
- Participates in the short and long term planning of the department, including the development of proper internal controls;
- Brings forward issues related to procedure and policy development that require broader consultation and consideration to other members of the Finance leadership team;
- Provides ongoing advice, guidance or instruction, including to the standard of financial accounting principles and practices, to staff to ensure accuracy of work and service quality;
- Works collaboratively with appropriate workgroups to develop workflow, related documentation, training and implementation including performing Colleague testing protocols;
- Participates in the development of an annual calendar detailing workgroup activity and timeline for completion, particularly related to quarter and year-ends;
- Contributes to decision-making and planning related to policy, business processes, identifying projects and setting new directions within the Finance Department;
- Assists in implementing new procedures, policies and system enhancements;
- Performs other related duties similar in scope and complexity.
Qualifications
Successful completion of a police information check is required.
Completion of CPA Core Modules 1 and 2, and 4 years of experience in a computerized accounting environment which includes 1 year of senior level experience and responsibilities or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Demonstrated experience in preparing year-end schedules and supporting documentation and closing of year-end transactions;
- Demonstrated experience in financial planning, budgeting, forecasting and modeling.
- Good working knowledge of federal and provincial tax regulations;
- Proven ability to develop and use complex spreadsheets, graphs, charts and databases, within an enterprise wide management system, including importing and exporting data;
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and human relations skills;
- Proven ability to work independently, make decisions and assume responsibility and accountability accurately and with professional judgment;
- Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and meet scheduled deadlines;
- Experience and accuracy with MS Windows, Word, Excel and Access and financial software and reporting tools.
