Description
About Our Client
Our client is a rapidly growing professional services firm with a rich history spanning nearly 80 years and operations across Ontario. Fuelled by an aggressive merger and acquisition strategy, they've built one of the more robust finance functions you'll find in an organization of their size - a true reflection of how seriously they take the numbers behind their growth. With a corporate head office in Ontario this is a business that's doubling in size every few years and investing heavily in the people who help make that happen.
What Our Client Has to Offer
A genuinely high-growth environment with a clear path to advancement - as the branch network expands, so does the need for future controllers and finance leaders
Exposure to a high-volume, high-complexity finance operation spanning dozens of branches across the province
A collaborative, tight-knit team culture where colleagues regularly support one another across functions
Comprehensive group benefits
A hybrid work arrangement (23 days/week on-site)
The opportunity to build a strong technical foundation in accounting operations within a business that's scaling quickly through M&A
The Opportunity
Our client is looking to add an Accountant to their finance team. This role sits within a busy month-end close function supporting a large and growing network of branch offices. It's best described as a blend of bookkeeping, accounting technician, and early controllership work - ideal for someone who wants hands-on, high-volume experience and a clear runway to grow.
Key Responsibilities
Prepare and process recurring monthly journal entries across a large portfolio of branch locations
Complete multiple bank reconciliations throughout the month to keep pace with a high transaction volume
Own designated functional areas (e.g., trust accounting, payroll-related entries, or specific reconciliation streams) as part of a small, cross-trained team
Review monthly branch results prior to finalization, flagging missed accruals or entry errors
Support the month-end close cycle from day 0 through day 10, working within a structured close calendar
Partner with branch-level bookkeeping staff to ensure accurate and timely reporting
Provide backup coverage across functional areas during team absences
Assist with ad hoc reporting and reconciliation requests as the finance team's needs evolve
Contribute to process improvements as the finance function scales alongside the business
Collaborate with a broader finance organization that includes FP&A, corporate finance, and executive finance functions
Support year-end audit requests as needed
Maintain accurate supporting documentation for all recurring entries and reconciliations
What You Bring
1+ years of professional accounting/finance experience (co-op or internship experience considered for more junior candidates)
Comfort working with high transaction volumes and tight monthly deadlines
Strong Excel skills and general accounting system proficiency
Candidates actively pursuing, or who have completed, a CPA designation are encouraged to apply - this role can suit either a career-starter or someone finishing their designation requirements
A collaborative mindset and willingness to pitch in outside a narrowly defined scope
Comfort with periodic evening/weekend work during peak month-end periods
Willingness to work on-site in Markham 23 days per week
To be eligible for this role, you must be legally eligible to work in Canada.
