Job Description

As our Senior Accountant, you will prepare the operating budgets, quarterly forecasts, and long-range financial plans that keep our costs visible and our decisions grounded. You will review, analyze, and scrutinize costs and work with departments to ensure proper coding and reporting. You'll start every day planning and prioritizing work activities, using time efficiently and effectively. Your average workday consists of handling a large volume of accounting and statistical data, accurately updating models and variance files, and supporting month-end closing functions. To thrive in this role, you must know how to work independently, set goals, and meet deadlines. This position also provides accounting support to the Accounting Supervisor and Controller. Occasional overtime and some travel may be necessary.

This position is based in Juneau, Alaska, and works from our office in Vintage Business Park, Monday through Friday on a 5 days on, 2 days off schedule. This is not a mine site position and does not require relocation to Admiralty Island, though you will occasionally commute out and back to the mine site on the daily ferry.

The Greens Creek Mine, located on Admiralty Island 18 miles south of Juneau, is an underground polymetallic mine operating since 1989, employing approximately 515 people. The mine is owned and operated by Hecla Mining Company, headquartered in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Established in 1891, Hecla has a rich history as a distinguished and respected precious metals producer. Here's what you can expect in this role:

• Training first. Every hire is provided with MSHA training in the first 4 days of the job, and annually thereafter. We also provide hands-on training on our systems and procedures. We currently use Ellipse accounting software.
• You will be a primary resource for site budgeting, forecasting, and operating cost analysis.
• You will prepare quarterly site forecasts, annual budgets, and long-range/life-of-mine financial plans.
• You will compile annual operations and capital budget cost data for the site.
• You will work closely with our Staff Accountant maintaining capital project files for use in budgets and forecasts.
• You will review and analyze monthly operating costs and work with the departments to identify cost overruns and miscoding.
• You will assist in cost control and reduction efforts with the departments.
• You will provide technical accounting support to other members of the Accounting team as needed, and apply your financial aptitude to aid with monthly, quarterly, and annual closing processes.
• You will work Monday through Friday from the Juneau office in Vintage Business Park, on a 5 days on, 2 days off schedule. Occasional overtime, some travel, and occasional day trips out and back to the mine site on the daily ferry may be necessary.

POSITION SUMMARY

A senior level accounting role within the site accounting group, the Senior Accountant reports directly to the Accounting Supervisor. The role includes 1) preparation and analysis of site quarterly forecasts, annual operating and capital budgets, and long-range/life-of-mine financial plans, 2) review and analysis of monthly operating costs, working with departments on proper coding, cost overruns, and cost reduction, 3) month-end accounting support to the Accounting Supervisor, including journals, accruals, and reports, 4) maintenance of the sales revenue database in MS Access in support of the Sales Accountant, 5) preparation and timely filing of the annual sales and property tax returns, and 6) serving as liaison for department requests for special reports or analysis.

The Senior Accountant is a key position in our small, local accounting group at Hecla Greens Creek. The size of the group places this position in direct contact with every operating department at site, and this position seeks a highly motivated candidate who is comfortable handling a large volume of accounting and statistical data accurately and independently.

• Support the departments in the accurate coding, tracking, and reporting of safety, health, and environmental costs
• Attend safety meetings and participate in safety interactions

Departmental Responsibilities

Budgeting and Forecasting

• Prepare and analyze site quarterly forecasts and annual budgets, maintaining complex MS Excel models
• Compile annual operations and capital budget cost data for the site
• Prepare long-range and life-of-mine financial plans
• Work closely with the Staff Accountant maintaining capital project files for use in budgets and forecasts

Cost Review and Analysis

• Review and analyze monthly operating costs
• Work with the departments to compare costs to budgets for cost overruns or miscoding
• Assist in cost control and reduction efforts with the departments

Month-End and Period Close

• Provide month-end accounting support to the Accounting Supervisor including journals, accruals, reports, etc.
• Aid with monthly, quarterly, and annual closing processes

Sales Revenue Database

Update and manage a sales revenue database in MS Access as an integral part of supporting the Sales Accountant

Tax Filings

• Annually prepare the required sales and property tax filings and submit timely to the local government

Reporting and Department Support

• Serve as liaison for department requests for special reports or analysis
• Provide technical accounting support to other members of the Accounting team as needed

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or Experience

B.A. in Accounting or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience

Five or more years' experience in accounting, preferably in the mining industry: Experience and familiarity with job functions as described

Other Qualifications

• Word processing, spreadsheet and database proficiency (MS Word, MS Excel & MS Access/SQL preferred); Ellipse accounting software experience a plus
• Capable of working independently as well as within a team environment, with strong interpersonal, presentation and communications skills
• Strong written communication and presentation skills
• Demonstrated ability to operate with a high degree of autonomy, stay organized, set goals, meet deadlines, and effectively manage a large volume of accounting and statistical data in a dynamic work environment
• Pass a pre-employment physical and drug screen
• Pass a position-specific physical demands assessment
