This position maintains and reconciles ledgers and accounts according to generally accepted accounting principles in compliance with university, state and federal policies for Advancement at the University of Utah. The Accountant will support staff with general accounting activities including, but not limited to, payments of invoices, reconciliation of accounts, preparation of employee reimbursements, assistance with yearly purchasing card audits, end-of-month review/ sign-off, and purchasing. This role will also prepare and analyze financial information based upon derived statistics and analysis performed to enhance fiscal accountability and reporting. The Accountant reports to the Director of Administration for University Advancement.

The successful candidate will have the ability to exercise good judgment in a variety of situations, strong written and verbal communication, administrative, time-management and organizational skills, social and emotional intelligence, and the ability to triage and manage multiple priorities and projects. The successful candidate will be a detail-oriented self-starter with a strong work ethic and customer service orientation, will possess superior scheduling and organizational skills, will display the ability to work independently on projects from conception to completion, and will be able to meet deadlines. A successful candidate must have operational knowledge of Microsoft Office and related computer software including, Outlook, Power Point and Word/Excel.

Responsibilities

  1. Respond to a variety of accounting-related questions, such as inquiries from vendors about invoice status, and assist department staff with questions on payment or purchasing documents, travel, and Pcard.

  2. Maintain fiscal records for each fiscal year and support audits and internal control reviews.

  3. Manage GFA access, chartfields, and activity lifecycle (opening/closing, endowment transfers, wire transfers).

  4. Prepares and assesses budget, revenue, expense, payroll and journal entries, and other accounting documents to process invoices and reimbursements for payment.

  5. Analyzes and monitors budgets and expenditures for compliance with fiscal accountability and reporting requirements; Ensures transactions are posted correctly to accounts and reviews transactions for accuracy and required backup documentation.

  6. Helps develop accounting systems and documents to support financial data and reporting procedures in compliance with University, state, and federal policies.

  7. Collects, organizes, and analyzes data for specialized reports.

  8. Interacts with internal and external auditors to participate in auditing projects.

  9. Meet with account executives at the end of each statement period to review charges, make necessary corrections, and sign off on management reports.

  10. This person will assist with annual budget preparation and submission.

  11. Maintain high levels of customer service and transparency in all financial interactions.

  12. May assist with other administrative tasks as needed.

This position requires the ability to apply generally accepted accounting principles, federal cost accounting regulations, and University policies and procedures to a variety of situations. The incumbent must be able to interpret complex policies and effectively communicate the information in an easily understood manner. The incumbent is required to provide an analysis of each situation and use professional judgment in reaching a solution. The accountant is expected to recommend changes to accounting-based procedures based on analysis performed and specialized knowledge.

Minimum Qualifications

EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).

Accountants, I: Requires a bachelor's (or equivalency) + 2 years of directly related work experience or a master's (or equivalency) degree.

Accountants, II: Requires a bachelor's (or equivalency) + 4 years or a master's (or equivalency) + 2 years of directly related work experience.

Accountants, III: Requires a bachelor's (or equivalency) + 6 years or a master's (or equivalency) + 4 years of directly related work experience.
