Financial Accountant – Government Finance

About the Opportunity

aFit Staffing is seeking an experienced Financial Accountant to support a finance state project. This opportunity is ideal for an accounting professional with strong general ledger, account reconciliation, and financial reporting experience who can contribute to essential accounting operations in a public-sector environment.

The selected candidate will support core accounting functions, assist with financial close activities, and help maintain accurate financial records and documentation. This is a fully remote, full-time contract opportunity with an anticipated duration of 8–12 weeks and the possibility of extension.

Key Responsibilities

• Support month-end and year-end close processes, including preparation and review of journal entries.
• Perform general ledger accounting and account reconciliations to ensure financial accuracy.
• Assist with financial reporting, data analysis, and account review activities.
• Apply governmental accounting principles and practices in support of public-sector financial operations.
• Utilize ERP financial systems and Microsoft Excel to analyze financial data and support accounting processes.
• Maintain documentation related to accounting procedures, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
• Support internal control activities and audit preparation by ensuring records are accurate, complete, and well-documented.
• Identify discrepancies, investigate variances, and assist with resolving accounting issues.
• Collaborate with project stakeholders to support timely and accurate completion of financial activities.

Required Qualifications

• Experience supporting month-end and/or year-end financial close processes.
• Knowledge of journal entries, financial reporting, and core accounting principles.
• Experience working with ERP financial systems.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial data analysis.
• Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and problem-solving abilities.
• Ability to work independently and manage deadlines in a remote environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in governmental, municipal, or other public-sector accounting environments.
• Familiarity with governmental accounting principles and internal controls.
• Experience supporting financial audits and maintaining accounting documentation.
• CPA certification or other relevant accounting credentials.
