What You Do and How You Do It:

As an Accounts Payable Specialist in the Accounting Department, you will be responsible for auditing, analyzing, and processing payment requests to ensure accurate and timely payments in compliance with County policies and procedures. This role supports departments, schools, and suppliers by resolving payment issues, maintaining accurate financial records, and ensuring the greatest return on County funds through proper payment and timing. You will be responsible for:

Payment Processing & Compliance

  • Through direct data entry and business process workflows audit, analyze, and process payment requests to ensure accuracy, completeness, and policy compliance
  • Compare supplier invoices to purchase orders and electronic receipt of goods/services
  • Verify required approvals and authorization

Problem Solving & Resolution

  • Provide guidance and support to departments, schools, and suppliers regarding payment inquiries
  • Process voided checks and stop payments
  • Research and resolve budget check (BC) and matching exceptions
  • Investigate past-due balances and unapplied payments
  • Reconcile supplier statements with the Accounts Payable system to ensure accuracy and completeness

Here's What You Need:

High school diploma or GED required, along with a basic understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). A minimum of two years of general business experience, preferably in an accounting environment and two years of accounts payable experience with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems (e.g., Workday, SAP, Oracle), or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment and demonstrate strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, excellent customer service, and strong computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office. Strong analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities are required, along with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels of a complex organization.

Experience in public-sector or governmental accounting, as well as experience with Workday ERP and Microsoft SharePoint, is a plus. Pre-employment drug testing, an FBI criminal background check, and education/degree verification are required.
