The Accounting Manager is responsible for the reliability, timeliness and control of Sunshine Ace Hardware's day-to-day accounting function and delivers a closed, reconciled set of books with exceptions clearly surfaced. This position will lead the accounting team, strengthen controls and processes, and provide accurate multi-store reporting and analysis that supports store management, the executive team and company growth. The duties of this position are to be performed while demonstrating all of Sunshine Ace Hardware's Core Values and Fundamentals.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Responsible for the monthly, quarterly and annual close, including the close calendar, preliminary financial statements, issue resolution and continuous improvement of close timing. Responsible for general-ledger integrity, chart of accounts, material balance-sheet reconciliations and resolution of aged reconciling items. Produce timely monthly financial statements, store-management reporting, company/store KPIs and trend reporting; analyze unusual transactions and budget-to-actual variances. Supervise and develop the finance and accounting team; establish priorities, backup coverage, performance expectations and training. Review journal entries, accruals, prepaids, payroll/PTO accounting, fixed assets, inventory/shrink/LIFO accounting, lease accounting and period-end cutoff. Oversee AP, AR, bank reconciliations, store deposits, settlement reconciliations, sales tax and related accounting controls. Own accounting and recurring reporting for Handyman and other assigned entities, while escalating strategic or ownership matters to the CFO. Coordinate audit, tax and year-end support; maintain organized schedules and workpapers and serve as the primary day-to-day contact for information requests. Partner with the CFO on annual budgeting, periodic reforecasting, cash-flow support, fiscal planning and growth initiatives; the CFO retains ownership of final forecasts, treasury strategy and executive recommendations. Ensure compliance with established financial procedures and maintain systems and controls that protect the integrity of financial processes and data. Identify and implement process improvements, automation and standardization that reduce manual work, improve controls and eliminate redundancies. Work proactively with store and department leaders to resolve accounting/reporting needs and explain financial implications. Escalate material variances, unusual transactions, control deficiencies, credit/cash risks and judgment matters to the CFO with a recommended course of action. Support ad hoc analysis, acquisitions/integration and other special projects as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance or a combination of education and experience. 7-12 years of progressive accounting experience Minimum of 3 years of managing a team with demonstrated accounting-team leadership Experience with day-to-day financial operations Strong computer skills; use of Google product suite Strong GAAP, GL, close, balance-sheet reconciliation, accrual, fixed-asset and financial-statement preparation capability. Multi-location retail, distribution or other inventory-intensive experience strongly preferred; inventory, receiving/cutoff and shrink knowledge is valuable. Strong analytical, written and verbal communication skills; able to manage competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Hands-on, resourceful leader who identifies issues before they reach the CFO and brings a practical recommendation. Strong systems orientation and demonstrated ability to improve processes and create efficiencies. CPA or CMA preferred, but operating capability, judgment and relevant experience carry greater weight than credential alone. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment; ability to be a team player with a focus on internal customer satisfaction. Strong analytical skills with an attention to detail Decision Making: Assist in making decisions by bringing recommendations to the manager on the task at hand; Collaborate with other departments to identify proper solutions to the issue at hand; Determine appropriate prioritization of individual monthly tasks in order to meet overall deadlines, seeking guidance when needed. Resourcefulness/Creativity: The ability to handle multiple tasks while adhering to deadlines is required. The ability to improve processes and create efficiencies is a plus. Flexibility and adaptability to evolving business needs are also essential.
Physical Demands
Fast-paced environment. Heavy workload is required during key financial processes such as the monthly, year-end close and budget. These periods may require overtime or work outside of the regular work schedule, including evenings and weekends. Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight up to 15 pounds; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; and effectively verbally communicate to exchange information.
Other Qualifications
Possession of a valid State of Florida Driver License with a clean driving record in accordance with the company's insurance carriers standards Must have current auto liability insurance for such time when operating a personal automobile is necessary.
