Job Description:

GENERAL SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY:

The accountant, under general supervision, performs specialized financial duties for the district in accordance with established accounting policies and procedures. This role involves processing and maintaining accounting records, as well as providing financial and administrative support to ensure the timely processing of authorized financial obligations. The accountant is responsible for ensuring compliance with Business Office reporting requirements and maintaining associated files. Additionally, the role includes recommending improvements to methods or procedures to enhance the efficiency of the Business Office.

RELATIONSHIP WITHIN THE SCHOOL ORGANIZATION:

The Accountant is supervised in his/her daily functions by the Director of Accounting and evaluated annually by the Director of Accounting.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: This section is intended to describe general nature and level of work being performed by incumbent.   • Assists the Executive Director of Finance and Operations in the preparation and maintenance of financial records, general ledgers, and journal entries in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) guidelines.
  • Assists in the monthly reconciliation of bank statements, district accounts, and student activity funds.
  • Assists the Executive Director of Finance and Operations in the development, implementation, and monitoring of the districts annual operating budget.
  • Serves at the primary backup for the accounts payable and payroll departments.
  • Assists with the accounts receivable process, including tuition, facility rentals, and state/federal reimbursements.
  • Manages fixed assets.
  • Assists with the annual external audit.
  • Evaluates and improves internal accounting procedures and workflows to enhance departmental efficiency and financial transparency.
  • Prepares financial reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing account information and trends.
  • Manages maintenance of Business Office records based upon State Library guidelines.
  • Assists with the generating and processing of W-2 and 1099 forms.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Executive Director of Finance and Operations.

QUALIFICATIONS/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

The incumbent must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the skill, knowledge and/or abilities required.*

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelors degree in accounting, Finance or closely related field required.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of accounting experience. Experience in public school finance, municipal accounting, or fund accounting is preferred.
  • Proficiency in Munis and Microsoft Excel.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills, with the ability to explain complex financial data to non-financial stakeholders, and the ability to work effectively with a diverse staff in a cooperative manner.
