The City of South Lake Tahoe is seeking an Accounting Technician I/II to staff the service counter and collect tax and other payments. The Accounting Technician also performs data entry related to tax collection and accounts payable or accounts receivable in addition to preparing monthly, quarterly and year-end reports.

The selected candidate may be offered either the Accounting Technician I or Accounting Technician II position based on demonstrated skill strength and experience.

  • To be hired as an Accounting Technician I, a candidate must have a High School Diploma or equivalent and 1 year of office support experience. Coursework in bookkeeping or accounting is highly desirable.
  • To be hired as an Accounting Technician II, a candidate must have a High School Diploma and coursework in bookkeeping or accounting with at least 2 years of clerical or accounting experience. An AA degree is highly desirable.

Accounting Technician I: $4,179 - $5,080 per month

Accounting Technician II: $5,027 - $6,111 per month

Examples of Duties

  • Acts as receptionist; answers telephone and provides service to the general public; gives information on departmental and City policies and procedures; responds to questions and concerns.
  • Accepts and processes taxes and other payments from customers; makes change and maintains cash drawer; balances and posts transactions daily and prepares bank deposits.
  • Performs a variety of routine to complex administrative and technical accounting support duties related to accounts payable, business licensing, and/or department specific technical accounting duties, including posting, balancing, adjusting, and maintaining manual and computerized accounting and financial records according to established policies and procedures.
  • Enters and retrieves information and data using standard word processing and spreadsheet software, as well as accounting, financial, and other related electronic information systems specific to the department to which assigned.
  • Maintains a variety of ledgers, registers, and journals according to established account policies and procedures; reconciles transactions and data as directed; records changes and resolves differences; maintains the accuracy of accounting and financial records.
  • Generates and assists in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial, summary, and technical reports.
  • Performs general office support duties such as opening, routing, and delivering mail; preparing correspondence; filing and record keeping; duplicating and distributing various written materials; and ordering and keeping inventory of office supplies.
  • Assists customers, departments, and employees by providing answers and information; researches issues; updates files and department on action items.
  • Assists with year-end closing process.
  • Assists with special projects as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Accounting Technician I:

Education/Training:

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. Additional specialized clerical/technical accounting or bookkeeping training or coursework is desirable.

Experience:

One year of responsible office support experience including some clerical and technical accounting experience.

Accounting Technician II:

Education/Training:

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized clerical/technical accounting or bookkeeping training or coursework. An associate degree is highly desirable.

Experience:

Two years of responsible clerical and technical accounting experience comparable to an Accounting Technician I with the City of South Lake Tahoe.

License or Certificate:

Possession of a valid California or Nevada drivers license may be required for some positions.
