ABOUT THE POSITION

We are seeking an Accounting Technician to join our team and support a wide range of financial and accounting operations within a fast-paced court environment. In this role, you will help ensure the accurate processing, verification, and distribution of funds while maintaining compliance with established financial procedures, legal requirements, and internal controls. The Accounting Technician works closely with accounting systems and financial records to reconcile accounts, process claims, manage trust funds, handle bail refunds, and support revenue distribution activities. This position also provides customer service and technical assistance to court staff, attorneys, agencies, and members of the public regarding financial and accounting-related matters. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, organized, and capable of exercising sound judgment while handling confidential information with professionalism and accuracy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Process, reconcile, verify, and maintain financial transactions, accounting records, deposits, and revenue distributions in accordance with court policies and accounting procedures.
  • Prepare, review, and generate financial reports, journal vouchers, trust fund transactions, bail refunds, claims, and other accounting documentation accurately and timely.
  • Research, identify, and resolve discrepancies related to deposits, revenue distribution, trust accounts, returned payments, claims, and financial records.
  • Provide courteous and accurate assistance to court staff, attorneys, justice partners, and the public regarding accounting procedures, financial inquiries, and case-related transactions.
  • Utilize financial management systems and software to track, reconcile, and report financial and case management information.
  • Support budget and expenditure monitoring activities by verifying coding accuracy, ensuring compliance with financial policies and procedures, assisting with monthly close activities, and preparing supporting documentation for financial review.

THIS IS A TELEWORK ELIGIBLE OPPORTUNITY

This position may be eligible for telework following an initial training period and contingent upon the needs of the Court.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements at the final filing date of this bulletin:

Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent; completion of course work in bookkeeping and accounting* -AND- three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in performing financial or statistical recordkeeping, at least two (2) years of which were at the level of Accounting Assistant.

Experience at the level of Accounting Assistant is defined as performing work in a comparable class with the same level of responsibility and requiring the same knowledge, skills and abilities.

Note: Credit for experience is based on a 40-hour workweek. Part-time experience is credited on a pro rate basis (e.g. working 20 hours per week for two months equals one month of experience). Overtime does not count toward additional credit.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of governmental accounting practices, financial recordkeeping, internal controls, and court-related financial procedures.
  • Strong analytical and mathematical skills with the ability to accurately process and reconcile complex financial transactions.
  • Proficiency in spreadsheet applications, accounting software, and standard office equipment.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and customer service skills with the ability to handle sensitive and confidential information professionally.
  • Ability to interpret policies, regulations, and procedures while exercising sound judgment, accuracy, and attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.

Choices Benefit Plan

Benefits may be purchased using a tax-free monthly benefits allowance between $1,149.21 - $2,476.90 for the 2025 plan year (based on number enrolled in medical coverage). If the monthly cost of the benefits selected is less than the monthly allowance, the employee receives the difference as additional taxable pay, up to a maximum of $244.00. Insurance

The Choices plan includes a robust range of insurance options, including medical, dental, disability, life, and AD&D insurance.

Flexible Spending Accounts

Employees may contribute up to $266 per month into a tax-free Health Care Spending Account and up to $400 per month tax-free into a Dependent Care Spending Account. The Court contributes up to $375 per month to the Dependent Care Spending Account.

Leave Benefits

Vacation - All permanent and other designated categories of employees are eligible to earn paid vacation based on years of service. Vacation is based on continuous service and credited at the completion of each consecutive six-month period of employment.

Sick leave - Depending on the length of service and employment categories, up to one day of full pay per month of service is accrued monthly for qualifying service.

Holidays - 14 days per year.

Retirement

Deferred Compensation Plan (457) - Optional tax-deferred supplemental retirement plan that includes a County match of up to 4% of employees salary.

Retirement Pension Plan administered by the Los Angeles County Employees Retirement Association (LACERA).

If the candidate is a "new member" of the Countys defined benefit plan (LACERA) on or after January 1, 2013, that persons pension will be limited under the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act (PEPRA). For these purposes, a "new member" is someone who first becomes a member of LACERA on or after January 1, 2013 - that is, someone first employed by the County on or after December 1, 2012 - unless she or he established reciprocity with another public retirement system in which she or he was a member before January 1, 2013.
