Job Description:

POSITION: Athletic Trainer (Part-Time, Hourly)

Putnam High School seeks a qualified professional to coordinate and provide a comprehensive athletic health care program for student-athletes. The Athletic Trainer provides injury and illness prevention, evaluation, emergency care, treatment, rehabilitation, and return-to-play support in accordance with Connecticut law, professional standards, CIAC guidance, district policies, and annual written standing orders from a licensed medical provider.

POSITION DETAILS & COMPENSATION

  • Schedule: Approx. 20-22 hrs/wk (Fall/Spring) and 25-30 hrs/wk (Winter); up to 6 days/week. Most hours occur between 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., including evenings, weekends, vacations, and postseason. Located at Putnam High School and assigned district sites.
  • Reports To: Athletic Director or designee.
  • Anticipated Start Date: August 2026.
  • Rate of Pay: $40.00 - $50.00 per hour, DOE.

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Athletic Coverage & Clinical Care: Provide coverage for practices, home contests, tournaments, and postseason events. Evaluate injuries, provide immediate care, and administer treatment, taping, and rehabilitation within standing orders.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Develop, review, and rehearse venue-specific Emergency Action Plans (EAPs). Inspect and maintain equipment (AEDs, medical kits, cold-water immersion gear).
  • Program Administration: Maintain injury reports, treatment logs, and return-to-play records. Coordinate clearances with the school nurse and enter data into district, state, and CIAC systems while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Serve as primary liaison between coaches, athletes, families, school nurses, administrators, and medical providers.
  • Education: Educate coaches, athletes, and families on concussion management, sudden cardiac arrest, heat illness, hydration, and safe conditioning.
  • Inventory Management: Maintain supply inventory and submit purchasing recommendations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Official credential verification required prior to employment.

  • Licensure: Current, unrestricted CT Department of Public Health (DPH) Athletic Trainer license.
  • Credentials: Current Board of Certification (BOC) certification and ATC credential.
  • Education: Bachelors degree required; Masters degree in athletic training or related field preferred.
  • Certifications: Current professional rescuer certifications in CPR, AED, First Aid, and Prevention of Disease Transmission.
  • Knowledge & Experience: Strong understanding of safety protocols (concussions, heat illness, cardiac arrest) and electronic injury-management systems.
  • Background Check: Successful completion of required criminal history checks, fingerprinting, child-protection screening, and mandated reporter training.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 2+ years of athletic training experience (preferably in a middle/high school setting).
  • Familiarity with CIAC and NFHS rules, protocols, and interscholastic programs.
  • Experience with computerized concussion baseline assessments, wrestling weight-management protocols, and venue-specific EAPs.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Requires frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, reaching, and rapid response to emergencies. Must be able to carry supplies and move emergency equipment, with or without accommodation. Involves indoor/outdoor work in varying weather and potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
