Description of Work

Position: Actuarial Analyst - P&C Focus

Salary Recruitment Range: $60,000-$72,100

Salary Grade: NC12

The posting will close at 11:59 p.m. the night before the closing date.

This position currently qualifies for a hybrid telework option with routine office and up to one remote workday per week after an orientation period. The NC Department of Insurance trusts our employees to be self-motivated and successful in hybrid/remote roles. Telework options are subject to change at the discretion of management.

Primary Purpose of the Position:

This position is assigned to Actuarial Services Division and provides technical support to the Chief Actuary and the Company Services Group and completes the actuarial reviews of the rate bureau filings. This Financial/Actuarial Analyst will assist with devising and conducting special studies on important issues affecting the P&C insurance and performs special technical projects under the guidance of the Chief Actuary. These special studies would include the data calls and reserve reviews for both traditional insurance companies and risk retention groups.

Positions in this class may assist in assembling and analyzing data to estimate the probability and likely cost of the occurrence of certain insurable events. Positions may support agency actuaries in providing consultation and professional recommendations to various divisions within an agency or department. The range of duties includes, but is not limited to, reviewing data/information concerning rate, rule and policy form filings; reviewing Statements of Actuarial Opinion; analyzing data for rate hearings; assisting with surveys or data calls of insurers. Positions may perform additional duties as assigned by supervisor. Work is reviewed by a supervisor for content and technical accuracy.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

• Basic knowledge of North Carolina laws and regulations as they relate to actuarial practice.
• Ability to prepare written reports that are clear, concise, appropriate for intended audience and well documented.
• Basic project management skills to work as a team to develop new processes and procedures based upon changes in laws and regulations or industry practice.
• Candidates are expected to pursue membership in either the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS).

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in actuarial science, mathematics, business, or closely related field from an appropriately accredited institution.
