Unit School of Medicine Department of Surgery Mission or Goal of Unit

The mission of the Division of Acute Care Surgical Services of the Department of Surgery is to provide excellence in clinical care, the advancement of science through research, and the training of undergraduate and graduate students in our discipline. The Department fosters a level of professional activity essential to the graduate and to the professional growth of the faculty. The Division provides junior faculty with clinical and research experiences that prepare them for their professional careers. Finally, faculty have a responsibility to provide service to their profession and to the university community.

 

Chief Purpose of this position

The Department of Surgery Division of Acute Care Surgical Services is recruiting for a junior-level collateral non-tenure track faculty position in the area of Acute Care Surgery. Duties will include:

• Clinical responsibilities in all areas of Trauma, Emergency, General Surgery, and Surgical Critical Care, including inpatient rounds, clinics, consults, surgeries as primary and assistant surgeon, and call • Education and quality improvement

In addition to VCU Medical Center, there will also be a Community Trauma and EGS call expectation.

 

Position Responsibilities

Teaching Faculty member will have teaching responsibilities in all areas of acute care surgery.

Research Faculty member will establish clinical research projects with a record of publication in refereed journals and external funding. They are expected to develop interdisciplinary collaborations to enhance the research program at VCU.

Service Faculty will serve on departmental and/or university committees as necessary, as well as in a professional capacity in their field, i.e., reviewer, conference organizer, etc.

Clinical Clinical faculty member will be clinically responsible for the care of Trauma, Emergency, General Surgery, and Surgical Critical Care patients on the MCV campus of VCU, as well as its expansion efforts at VCU Community Memorial Hospital. They will be responsible for the development of an active surgical practice with the support of the Division and Departments leadership.

 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

• Must be board certified or board eligible in General Surgery • Trauma and Critical Care fellowship training • Prior experience teaching residents and medical students • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism, and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications

• Board eligibility or certification in surgical critical care • Training in robotic surgery
