Acute Care Nurse Practitioner / Physician Assistant - Inpatient Neurosurgery

University Medical Center New Orleans is seeking an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) or Physician Assistant (PA) to join our Inpatient Neurosurgery service. This advanced practice provider will play a vital role in the day-to-day management of neurosurgical patients, working closely with neurosurgeons, residents, consulting services, nurses, case managers, and other healthcare professionals to ensure exceptional patient outcomes.

Role Highlights

  • Monday-Friday schedule
  • Typical hours: 6:30 AM - 2:30 PM
  • Collaborative academic practice environment
  • Opportunity to perform bedside procedures following training and competency validation
  • Direct involvement in patient care coordination, discharge planning, and interdisciplinary collaboration

Your Everyday

Neurosurgical Patient Management

  • Round daily on inpatient neurosurgical patients and perform comprehensive assessments and neurological examinations.
  • Manage treatment plans for patients with traumatic brain injuries, spinal disorders, tumors, hydrocephalus, intracranial hemorrhages, and other complex neurological conditions.
  • Communicate patient findings and care plans with neurosurgery residents and attending physicians.
  • Coordinate consultations, diagnostic testing, and multidisciplinary care planning.
  • Provide daily updates to patients and families and serve as a key communication liaison between providers and care teams.
  • Facilitate safe and efficient discharges, helping reduce unnecessary readmissions and loss to follow-up.

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Evaluate inpatient and emergency department consultations as directed by the Neurosurgery team.
  • Monitor patient progress, respond to changes in condition, and implement evidence-based treatment plans.
  • Complete daily progress notes, admission histories and physicals, discharge documentation, and post-operative assessments.
  • Participate in daily huddles, case management rounds, and interdisciplinary care conferences.
  • Coordinate care transitions and communicate recommendations with consulting services and primary teams.

Procedures

Following training and competency validation, APPs may perform neurosurgical procedures within approved privileges, including:

  • Shunt taps
  • Shunt valve adjustments
  • Drain removal
  • Staple and suture removal
  • Wound care management

Additional procedures may be incorporated based on experience, training, and departmental needs.

Education, Leadership & Quality

  • Serve as a clinical resource for patients, families, nursing staff, and healthcare providers.
  • Participate in research, quality improvement initiatives, and professional development activities.
  • Support a culture of patient safety, collaboration, and continuous learning.
  • Mentor students, nurses, and advanced practice providers as appropriate.

Qualifications

Education

Nurse Practitioner Candidates

  • Master's or Doctorate Degree from an accredited Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program.

Physician Assistant Candidates

  • Master's Degree from an accredited Physician Assistant Program.

Licensure & Certifications

Nurse Practitioner Candidates

  • Current Louisiana Registered Nurse (RN) License
  • Current Louisiana Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) License
  • Current Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Certification
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification

Physician Assistant Candidates

  • Current Louisiana Physician Assistant License
  • NCCPA Certification
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification

Preferred Qualifications

  • Neurosurgery, Neurocritical Care, Trauma, Surgical, Critical Care, or inpatient advanced practice experience.
  • Strong clinical assessment and critical-thinking skills.
  • Experience managing complex hospitalized patients in a multidisciplinary environment.
