POSITION OVERVIEW
The Adapted Physical Education (APE) Teacher provides specialized physical education instruction to students with disabilities across multiple school sites. This itinerant position supports students in developing motor skills, physical fitness, and social-emotional growth while ensuring access to the general education curriculum through individualized and adaptive strategies.
The APE Teacher collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to deliver services aligned with each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP) and complies with federal, state, and district special education regulations.

Salary: In accordance with the MPSD Teacher Pay Scale and applicable state guidelines

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide adapted physical education services based on evaluation results and IEP decisions.
- Assist in evaluations following Bulletin 1508 guidelines.
- Participate in IEP meetings and annual reviews.
- Develop and implement instruction aligned with IEP goals.
- Maintain accurate records including progress notes, attendance, and lesson plans.
- Complete evaluation reports within required timelines.
- Obtain physician orders when required.
- Provide training for staff and parents.
- Collaborate with school and community personnel.
- Serve as evaluation coordinator when assigned.
- Follow school schedules and district policies.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
- Valid Louisiana teaching certification in Physical Education or Adapted Physical Education (or eligibility to obtain)
- Demonstrated knowledge of special education laws and procedures, including IDEA
- Ability to pass required background checks and meet district employment requirements
- Demonstrated skills in classroom management, supervision, and instructional planning
- Knowledge of student safety protocols and wellness practices
- Ability to promote positive behavior and social-emotional development
- Strong communication, organization, and collaboration skills
- Commitment to equity, student well-being, and professional growth
- Candidates enrolled in an approved Teacher Preparation Program must provide proof of enrollment, completed coursework, and official Praxis exam scores (if applicable)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Certification or endorsement in Adapted Physical Education
- Knowledge of Louisiana Bulletin 1508 procedures
- Experience working with students with disabilities in a school setting
- Familiarity with SBLC, RTI (academic/behavior), IEP, and Section 504 processes
- Strong collaboration skills with multidisciplinary teams
- National certification and prior school system experience
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to travel frequently between multiple school sites within the district, including transporting necessary adaptive equipment
- Ability to stand, walk, and remain physically active for extended periods during instructional sessions
- Demonstrate and actively participate in a variety of physical activities, exercises, and sports adapted for students with diverse abilities
- Ability to lift, carry, and set up adaptive physical education equipment (typically up to 25-50 lbs)
- Capability to assist students with physical disabilities, including providing physical support, positioning, transfers, or mobility assistance when required
- Good balance, coordination, and motor skills to safely model movements and ensure student safety
- Ability to bend, reach, kneel, crouch, and move quickly in response to student needs or safety concerns
- Adequate visual and auditory ability (with or without assistive devices) to monitor student performance, behavior, and safety across various environments
- Ability to work in a variety of indoor and outdoor settings, including exposure to different weather conditions, gym environments, and playground surfaces
- Physical stamina and endurance sufficient to manage a full day of active teaching, travel, and student support
