This position is for an adjunct instructor, or `per courser,' who will teach the Physics 407 lecture class on introductory physics for scientists and engineers.

Job Duties

In-person contact with students (35%)

  • This includes preparing and delivering three lectures per week, holding in-person office hours to answer student questions, spending one hour per week in the Physics Help Center, and communicating with students concerning requests for extensions, make-up exams, and absences from class.

Managing the course workflow (45%)

  • This includes preparing homework problem sets and solutions, preparing recitation problems and solutions, selecting the laboratory exercises that will be done each week and making sure these are timed appropriately with the lectures, and preparing in-class exams and solutions. This also includes developing a syllabus and class schedule and posting information about different aspects of the course on Canvas to establish effective communication with the students in the class.

Managing the teaching assistants (20%)

  • This includes meeting as needed with the teaching assistants to discuss the labs and lab policies, assign grading tasks to the teaching assistants, and establish grading rubrics and policies for the teaching assistants to follow.

Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience:

  • PhD in physics or equivalent degree

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • The candidate must have expert knowledge of physics, excellent communication skills, and the ability to interact professionally with large numbers of students in a classroom environment.

Compensation Pay Range:

$10,000
