Part-time Starting January 2027
Application Deadline: Open Until Filled
Priority Screening: November 15, 2026 at 4PM EST
Position Summary:
SUNY Ulster, a two-year branch of the State University of New York located ninety miles north of New York City in the Catskill Mountains, is currently accepting applications for part-time teaching assignments for ART 107 Art History I or ART 108 Art History II in the Fine Arts: Visual Arts program at SUNY Ulster for the Spring 2027 semester to be taught in person at Shawangunk Correctional Facility. Shawangunk Correctional Facility requires that the successful candidate complete a background check, mandatory orientation and training, and TB test.
Under the general supervision of the Program Coordinator for the Fine Art/Visual Arts program, the adjunct instructor will provide instruction in accordance with course descriptions, outlines, class schedules, and Governing Board policy; evaluate progress of students concerning educational matters, and perform other instructional related duties as assigned. Candidates should meet the minimum job requirements as specified below and be willing to teach in person. The successful candidate will receive the approved course syllabus and a course outline, lectures, assignments, readings and assessment materials will need to be developed.
Course Description:
ART 107 Art History I
This course presents a beginning survey of art history in western civilizations and other global civilizations, from antiquity through the Middle Ages. Students are provided with the opportunity to evaluate various art forms as influenced by traditional, cultural, social and religious conditions, technological progress, and industrial civilizations.
ART 108 Art History II
This course is a basic survey of art history of primarily Western art from the beginnings of the Renaissance through the early 20th Century. Because there is a separate course in 20th Century Art History, this course will concentrate on art through the 19th Century, and up through World War I. It will include brief explorations of non-Western Art History, timing our exploration either according to the principle of contemporaneous developments or timing our shift to that study according to the points in time when such art became a part of the consciousness of artists and cultural consumers in the West. For example, Japanese art will be studied in connection with the art of the 19th Century, because such art became very popular in Europe following the opening of Japan in the mid-to-late 1800's.
Course descriptions may be viewed in the SUNY Ulster catalog.
