Course Description:

Principles of Chemistry (CHE 120) introduces students to the core concepts of chemistry. It is suitable for students with little to no prior chemistry instruction. Topics include measurement and unit conversions; physical and chemical properties; states of matter and energy; atomic structure; chemical periodicity; chemical nomenclature; chemical bonds; Lewis structures and molecular shapes; chemical reactions; the mole concept and stoichiometry; properties of gases; acid-base solutions; and the pH concept. The course provides an integrated lecture-and-laboratory experience.

STEM Division

Semester Period: FALL 2026: August 24, 2026, to December 11, 2026

Principles of Chemistry (CHE 120) number of Credits: 4 (instructors are paid for 5 credits for lab courses)

Section 1201Lecture: Tuesday, Thursday, 7:30 - 8:50 AM (on-campus)

Lab: Tuesday, 9:00 - 11:50 AM (on-campus)

Section 1241Lecture: Tuesday, Thursday, 1:30 - 2:50 PM (on-campus)

Lab: Tuesday, 3:00 - 5:50 PM (on-campus)

Education and/or Experience Required:

Masters Degree or higher in Chemistry or a related discipline

Minimum of one year of teaching experience

Preferred:

Previous teaching experience in a college or university

Special Conditions:

PA residency required

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Provide primary instruction and lab skills training, using the approved course curriculum and lab equipment.

Monitor student progress, provide individualized student feedback, remedial support, and referrals as appropriate.

Maintain all student records by entering student grades and withdrawals in a timely manner, and upon completion of the course, provide students with the final course grade and evaluation.

Maintain a safe environment for students in the lab and demonstrate compliance with procedures and protocols for lab cleanliness and standards.

Adhere to procedures and policies and maintain good communications and working relationships with faculty, staff, and lab assistants.

Participate in teacher meetings and professional development activities as required.

Other Skills and Abilities:

Excellent organizational skills required.

Experience with curriculum development.

Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to establish positive relationships with students, faculty, and staff.
