Purpose/Summary

Purpose / Summary of Job

The Adjunct Instructor for Accounting supports student success across CCD's Accounting AAS, Bookkeeping, Payroll, and Tax Preparation certificate pathways. Instructors teach foundational and intermediate accounting courses with an emphasis on real-world application, inclusive pedagogy, and hands-on skill development.

This role requires instructors to begin with in-person teaching assignments, with eligibility for online/hybrid modalities after successful onboarding and demonstrated instructional effectiveness.

The position reports to the Business Pathways Program Chair and works collaboratively with faculty and staff to align teaching with program outcomes and college expectations.

Duties and Responsibilities

Teaching & Instruction

  • Teach assigned Accounting courses in-person during initial semesters; online/hybrid opportunities may be added after successful in-person performance.
  • Prepare and deliver high-quality instruction aligned with course outcomes and Accounting program pathways (financial accounting, managerial accounting, bookkeeping, payroll, tax).
  • Integrate industry-standard software, such as Quickbooks, Excel (including formulas, functions, and pivot tables); and tax preparation tools used in Tax Help Colorado (when applicable).
  • Maintain required learning management system (D2L) course shells, gradebooks, attendance, and student records.
  • Provide timely, constructive, equity-minded feedback using clear and supportive communication practices.

Pedagogy & Student Support

  • Build an inclusive learning environment that supports CCD's diverse student body.
  • Use active-learning strategies, real-world accounting scenarios, and scaffolded skill development.
  • Provide reasonable accommodations per CCD policy and refer students to tutoring, advising, and support services when appropriate.

Professional & Departmental Responsibilities

  • Participate in required trainings, onboarding, and periodic departmental meetings.
  • Follow college policies for instructional quality, student conduct, and record keeping.
  • Collaborate with faculty to maintain consistency across Accounting courses and ensure alignment with program outcomes.
  • Respond promptly to chair communications and participate in course scheduling processes.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: (Minimum/Required)

Master's degree in Accounting, or a related master's degree with at least 18 graduate credit hours in Accounting.

Experience: (Minimum/Required)

Occupational experience within the past 20 years in accounting, bookkeeping, payroll, tax preparation, auditing, or related field.

Technical & Instructional Skills: (Minimum/Required)

  • Proficiency with QuickBooks or other bookkeeping platforms.
  • Advanced Excel ability (formulas, pivot tables, data organization).
  • Familiarity with D2L, Banner, and cloud-based instructional tools.
  • Ability to teach tax and payroll topics using modern tools.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: (Minimum/Required)

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Ability to create clear, supportive, and inclusive learning environments.
  • Organizational skills for managing multiple course sections, grading systems, and student communications.
  • Problem-solving and conflict-resolution abilities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with department faculty, staff, and administrators.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience: (Preferred)

  • Prior teaching experience at a community college or similar open-access institution.
  • Experience providing instruction to diverse, multilingual, first-generation, or returning adult learners.
  • Professional experience with tax preparation (VITA/Tax Help Colorado), payroll services, or small-business accounting workflows.
  • Experience designing student-centered, equity-minded curriculum aligned to program outcomes.
