Cheyney University invites applications for an ADJUNCT Instructor which includes a Band/Choir Director position to oversee the Concert band, Marching band, the Pep Band, and other instrumental ensembles (as needed), and to oversee the Cheyney Choir. Teaching responsibilities include: teaching music courses, advancing the mission and vision of the University through music , advising students, research, curriculum development, continued scholarly growth , professional development, and service to the University, The Band /Choir Director will be responsible for: the supervision of all student participants, and auxiliary coordinators; procuring instruments and uniforms in conjunction with the University's Purchasing Department policies; and arranging and conducting all band and choir performances on and off campus. The candidate will also be responsible for teaching applied lessons in their discipline as well as courses in arranging and composition.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Teaching music courses, development of curriculum, service to the University, advising students.
  • Oversee and direct all band and choir administrative tasks including but not limited to: budget, scholarship awards, performances and recruitment efforts.
  • Establishes all participation policies and formulates an operation manual for all students and associated staff, be they compensated or volunteers.
  • Oversight and coordination with contractors and assistants, including the dance coordinator(s), flag coordinator(s).
  • Coordinate and oversee all recruitment and retention efforts of existing and potential band/choir members, including auxiliary personnel.
  • Provide mentorship, guidance, and support for members of the Concert, Marching, Pep Band and choir and other ensembles, as needed.
  • Prepare the music and field shows, drumline, etc., for all band performances.
  • Schedule all band and choir performances, on or off campus, completing travel and required paperwork needed for such participation, in accordance with university policies and procedures.
  • Select, maintain, and inventory all marching, pep, and concert band music, uniforms, instruments, and equipment and choir music.
  • Facilitate and maintain an instrument and instrumental supplies plus choir supplies, i.e., reeds, mouthpieces, etc., inventory, purchasing schedule, and student checkout system.
  • Responsible for the conduct and behavior of all instrumentalists, percussionists, band managers, choir members, and auxiliary members and the enforcement of university policies and sanctions relative to students academic and judicial performance.
  • All other relevant duties as assigned.

Requirements

Education and Qualifications

EDUCATION:

  • Minimum of a Masters degree in Music Education, Performance, Conducting, Jazz Studies, or related instrumental field or a Bachelor's degree in Music and Master's degree in Education with graduate level music credits.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in music or Master's degree in Education with graduate level music credits.
  • A minimum of five years of experience as a band /choir director at the high school and/or collegiate level.
  • Experience in instrumental ensemble conducting.
  • Experience in conducting a choir.
  • Experience with directing university band.
  • Experience designing and marching band writing drills. Experience researching, planning, implementing, and evaluating student music and auxiliary (dance/flag) performances in the context of marching and pep band.
  • Demonstrated commitment to developing inclusive teaching practices that engage students from diverse musical backgrounds.
  • Experience performing in multiple musical styles and traditions, including contemporary music and other popular idioms.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, parents, administration personnel, other directors, and offices such as admissions and athletics.
  • Strong program development, marketing, and event planning skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills to effectively work with others from varied social, educational, and economic backgrounds.
  • Detail orientated, organized, and has the ability to work effectively without constant supervision, make appropriate decisions, and have good judgment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Music or Master's degree in Education with graduate level music credits, or Doctorate in Music.
  • Experience teaching applied instrumental lessons at the collegiate level.
  • Expertise in Conducting a choir.
  • Must be able to include a link to prior or demonstrate band recordings in your application.
