    Description

    The Clinical Preceptor provides direct supervision and clinical instruction for groups of Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students within the clinical practice setting. Working collaboratively with the School of Nursing (SON) course faculty, the Clinical Preceptor facilitates clinical learning experiences developed as part of the nursing curriculum. Through direct supervision, role modeling, and coaching, the Clinical Preceptor supports the development of students clinical knowledge, technical skills, professional behaviors, clinical judgment, and critical thinking. The Clinical Preceptor promotes a safe, supportive, and engaging learning environment while providing formative and summative feedback regarding student performance using standardized evaluation tools.

    Example of Duties

    • Participate in required clinical orientation sessions and educational activities offered by Husson University School of Nursing and the assigned clinical agency.
    • Directly supervise a group of BSN nursing students in the assigned clinical setting in accordance with course learning outcomes, professional standards, and the policies of both the School of Nursing and the clinical agency.
    • Facilitate student learning through clinical teaching, coaching, role modeling, and direct supervision while promoting safe, ethical, evidence-based nursing practice.
    • Conduct pre- and post-clinical conferences using course objectives and learning activities.
    • Provide timely, constructive feedback to students using standardized clinical evaluation tools.
    • Communicate regularly with SON course faculty regarding student progress, concerns, and recommendations for additional support or remediation.
    • Provide the SON course faculty with a summary of each clinical day, including student progress, learning opportunities, and any significant issues or concerns.
    • Contribute objective performance feedback for midterm and final student evaluations using standardized evaluation criteria.
    • Notify the SON course faculty promptly of student absences, injuries, illnesses, safety concerns, or professional conduct issues occurring during the clinical experience.
    • Collaborate with SON course faculty to promote consistent clinical instruction and student success.

    Qualifications

    • Current, active, and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Maine.
    • Bachelors degree in Nursing (BSN) required; Masters degree in Nursing (MSN) preferred. Specialty certification relevant to the clinical area is desirable.
    • Minimum of one (1) year of active clinical nursing experience required; three (3) or more years of active clinical practice preferred.

    Visual Requirements

    Must be able to read, prepare, evaluate, and review a variety of materials in both electronic and printed formats, and observe student activities as necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.

    Working Conditions

    Work is performed primarily in instructional, laboratory, clinical, office, or remote learning environments, depending on course assignment and modality. The position may require evening, weekend, or off-site instructional activities.
