Location: San Antonio, TX
Employment Type: Direct Hire | Full-Time
Work Arrangement: Onsite
Compensation: $115,000–$175,000 annually (Based on Experience)

Position Overview

Wheeler Staffing Partners is seeking an experienced Administrative Director of Surgical Services (Operating Room) for a direct hire opportunity in San Antonio, TX. This executive nursing leadership role is responsible for providing strategic and operational oversight of the Operating Room and perioperative services while driving clinical excellence, physician satisfaction, operational efficiency, and exceptional patient outcomes.

The ideal candidate is an accomplished Operating Room leader with extensive acute care hospital experience, a proven background managing perioperative services, and a passion for developing high-performing clinical teams. This individual will partner closely with surgeons, anesthesia providers, and hospital leadership to optimize surgical operations and support continued service line growth.

Key Responsibilities

Perioperative Operations
  • Provide strategic and operational leadership for the Operating Room and perioperative services.
  • Oversee daily surgical operations to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care.
  • Optimize Operating Room utilization, block scheduling, room turnover times, and case throughput.
  • Monitor surgical volumes, staffing, and resource allocation to maximize operational performance.
  • Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesia providers, and multidisciplinary teams to improve surgical workflows and patient outcomes.
  • Develop and implement initiatives that enhance patient safety, surgical quality, physician satisfaction, and operational excellence.

Leadership & Staff Development
  • Recruit, hire, mentor, coach, and develop perioperative nursing leaders and clinical staff.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, engagement, and continuous improvement.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, succession planning, and leadership development initiatives.
  • Support staff education, competency validation, and ongoing professional development.
  • Promote employee engagement and implement strategies to improve retention.

Financial & Resource Management
  • Develop and manage departmental operating and capital budgets.
  • Monitor labor productivity, staffing efficiency, and supply utilization.
  • Oversee capital equipment planning, purchasing, and inventory management.
  • Identify opportunities for cost savings while maintaining exceptional patient care and clinical quality.

Quality & Regulatory Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with Joint Commission, CMS, OSHA, AORN, and all applicable federal and state regulations.
  • Lead quality improvement, patient safety, infection prevention, and regulatory readiness initiatives.
  • Monitor key performance indicators and surgical quality metrics.
  • Conduct root cause analyses and implement corrective action plans as needed.
  • Maintain continuous readiness for accreditation surveys and regulatory inspections.

Physician & Executive Collaboration
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with surgeons, anesthesia providers, physician leaders, and executive leadership.
  • Address physician concerns proactively while improving communication and collaboration.
  • Partner with medical staff to improve Operating Room efficiency, patient experience, and clinical outcomes.
  • Support strategic growth initiatives, new surgical programs, and service line expansion.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Texas.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of Operating Room clinical experience within an acute care hospital.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of progressive leadership experience managing Operating Room or Surgical Services.
  • Experience overseeing perioperative operations, staffing, physician relationships, budgeting, and quality initiatives.
  • Strong knowledge of Operating Room workflows, perioperative operations, and surgical services management.
  • Demonstrated success improving OR utilization, throughput, operational efficiency, and patient outcomes.
  • Experience managing departmental budgets, labor productivity, and capital equipment.
  • Excellent leadership, organizational, communication, and change management skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Previous Director or Administrative Director experience leading Surgical Services.
  • Experience overseeing multiple perioperative departments.
  • Experience leading high-volume surgical programs.
  • CNOR certification.
  • Nurse Executive Certification (NE-BC or NEA-BC).
  • Perioperative leadership certification.
  • Working knowledge of AORN standards, Joint Commission requirements, CMS regulations, and regulatory compliance.
