About the Agency

Workers compensation is essentially a no-fault insurance plan mandated by State law, supervised by the Workers Compensation Commission and paid for entirely by employers. The Workers Compensation Law was enacted by the Legislature in 1948 to guarantee the payment of certain medical and wage loss benefits to persons injured on their job. As part of this Law, the Workers Compensation Commission, with its office in Jackson, MS, was established to supervise and monitor claims which arise under the Law. An employer covered by the Law is required to secure the payment of workers compensation benefits to its employees by purchasing workers compensation insurance from an insurance company or by obtaining approval from the Commission to self-insure.

About the Position

Administrative Judge - Mississippi Workers' Compensation Commission The Administrative Judge is responsible for presiding over workers' compensation proceedings in assigned districts. The Administrative Judge conducts hearings, evaluates evidence, and issues decisions in accordance with the Mississippi Workers' Compensation Act, Commission rules, and applicable case law. The position requires regular presence at the Commission's office in Jackson, Mississippi, and travel throughout the state as necessary to conduct hearings. Key Responsibilities: ·Preside over contested workers' compensation cases, including evidentiary hearings and prehearing matters. ·Administer oaths, rule on motions, and ensure orderly proceedings consistent with due process. ·Review testimony, medical records, and documentary evidence to determine compensability, benefits, and related issues. ·Prepare and issue well-reasoned written orders and opinions based on the evidence and applicable law. ·Manage a docket efficiently while maintaining fairness and professionalism toward all parties. ·Participate in Commission training, meetings, and continuing legal education as required. -Perform other duties as assigned by the Commission.

What youll need to be Successful

  • Substantial knowledge of workers' compensation law and practice. ·Prior judicial, quasi-judicial, or administrative hearing officer experience. -Demonstrated ability to analyze complex legal and factual issues, write clearly, and manage proceedings with impartiality and decorum. ·Strong organizational and case management skills. ·Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Requires membership in the Mississippi State Bar Association. Administrative Judges preside over workers' compensation cases across Mississippi. The position requires an active Mississippi law license, strong legal experience (with preference for workers' compensation, administrative law, or litigation backgrounds), and excellent analytical, writing, and case management skills. The role also requires weekly presence at the Commission's office in Jackson, Mississippi, along with statewide travel to conduct hearings.
