The Oregon Department of Corrections is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Administrative Specialist 1 to join the Mailroom team at Santiam Correctional Institution (SCI). This position plays a vital role in ensuring the safe, secure, and efficient processing of mail for staff and Adults in Custody (AICs), helping maintain institutional security while supporting essential communication.

About the Job - Your Role
As the Mailroom Specialist, you are the backbone of daily mail operations at SCI. Your work ensures all mail complies with Department of Corrections Mail Rule #131 and that prohibited items never reach the facility. You'll work in a fast-paced, structured environment where accuracy matters and every task serves a purpose.

Working Conditions
This position is located within a secure adult correctional institution and requires daily interaction with Adults in Custody (AICs). Inherent custodial responsibilities include responding appropriately to incidents within the immediate work area, maintaining security through the proper control of keys, tools, and contraband, and documenting unusual incidents. The position may involve encounters with disruptive or abusive AICs and carries a potential risk of injury. Employees may be subject to emergency call-back and, during emergencies or work stoppages, may be assigned to perform duties in other areas of the institution as needed.
As a member of the mailroom team, this position regularly handles sensitive and confidential information and must maintain strict confidentiality at all times. The work also requires lifting and moving mail packages weighing up to 30 pounds, retrieving mail from various locations throughout the institution, including the use of stairs, and operating specialized equipment and systems such as OMS, IMRS, ICS Solutions, U.S. Postal Service postage meters, electric letter openers, and electronic postal scales. A valid driver's license is required, and the employee must be authorized to operate a motor vehicle.

The salary range listed above is for non-PERS qualifying applicants. PERS qualifying applicants may be eligible for an adjusted range to reflect an additional 6.95%.

The successful candidate for this position must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility. Due to CJIS requirements related to system access, there may be some felony convictions that could disqualify you for this position.
